Congratulations to @jongreen.bsky.social, @sdmccabe.com, @shugars.bsky.social, Hanyu Chwe, Luke Horgan, Shuyang Cao, and David Lazer, winners of the Walter Lippmann Best Published Article Award for "Curation Bubbles," published in the APSR. buff.ly/580BrtS
APSR abstract for "Curation Bubbles," by Jon Green, Stefan McCabe, Sarah Shugars, Hanyu Chwe, Luke Horgan, Shuyang Cao, and David Lazer, The authors argue networked curation on social media creates partisan "curation bubbles" at the story level, showing that source-level partisan measures can mischaracterize how partisan individual stories actually are. Full abstract is available in linked article.

I'm sure there will be plenty of discourse about this funny little episode but in all seriousness there's a Take out there for a responsible centrist worried about ~civility~ to write on how bad it is for a senator to *double down* on this very specific, very wrong detail in their conspiracy theory

seeing a lot of discussion about this and like: the reason the poster did a screenshot with no link is that if you actually search for the article you'd learn that this bill 1) has nothing to do with Zohran Mamdani 2) was introduced in committee back in May and didn't go anywhere

seems intuitive to me that a committee ranking top 100 anything based on purely subjective tastes in multiple dimensions could produce a ranking weirder and less defensible than any individual would produce on their own

What has made the University of California exceptional is its commitment to increase access without sacrificing excellence. In recent years, California has proudly defied a national trend: On average, about 40 percent of its students are the first in their families to attend a four-year college. More than half qualify for free tuition. The percentages of underrepresented students have crept up, through a variety of initiatives. The California Dream Act gave undocumented students access to financial aid, as well as in-state tuition. Students on University of California campuses may struggle with basic math, but they are graduating at record rates.

lol. lmao. datacolada.org/139
We expected this to be straightforward, but simple intuition and trial-and-error wasn’t giving us the answer. And so we resorted to an old-school AI method: linear regression. We set the dataset’s final grade as the dependent variable and the five component grades as the predictors. The coefficients tell us the average effect of each component on the final grade. Because final grades should be perfectly predicted by the grade components, we should get an R2 of 100%. Instead we got an R2 of 56.5%.

Huh.

a new job market paper! using surveys from 10.4 million college students over 40 years, I study the role of ideology in career aspirations. I show that ideology structures what careers people want, a pattern much stronger among high-income students. see here: tkeskinturk.github.io/aspirations.pdf
Ideology as a Luxury Good in Occupational Choice
Turgut Keskintürk
Duke University

Abstract
Career aspirations are formed long before people enter the labor market, but whether and how political ideology is part of that formative process remains poorly understood. Using yearly surveys of 10.4 million college freshmen entering U.S. institutions between 1976 and 2015, I show that ideology systematically structures occupational aspirations. This pattern is two to three times larger among students from the highest socioeconomic backgrounds than among those from the lowest. To explain this difference, I propose a luxury-good interpretation: political congruence, the match between one's politics and an occupation's perceived ideological orientation, constitutes an occupational amenity whose importance increases with material security. This, I theorize, makes ideology an expressive resource for life choices, though one that is unequally distributed.
