in government vs in opposition
In an ABC article today, Minister Malarndirri McCarthy said the following:

"What we agreed to abolish was actually the cashless debit card, and that's what we took to the election, and that's the card we actually abolished," Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy said.

"There has always been the BasicsCard in place, we know that some forms of income management has to be there, usually through the courts, usually it's part of conditions for people either in family and domestic violence situations or in regards to legal circles."

Senator McCarthy said First Nations people had indicated at various points that they wanted to keep the BasicsCard.Senator Malarndirri McCarthy rightly called the BasicsCard "discriminatory and racist" when she condemned it during a senate debate in December 2020. She said:

"The hurt was palpable. The anger has never gone away. That sense of deep oppression, of racism, has gone on for 13 years since that Intervention, in the policy of the BasicsCard. [The community] are very passionate about the fact that income management that is forced upon them is unfair, is discriminatory and racist. The BasicsCard was imposed as an income management measure under the Northern Territory Intervention in 2007. Twelve years later there has been no evidence to show any success of the BasicsCard."Labor’s shadow social services minister Linda Burney made the following commitment to welfare recipients during the 2022 election campaign. She said:

"Our fundamental principle on the BasicsCard and the Cashless Debit Card, it should be on a voluntary basis. It’s not up to Labor or anyone else to tell them what to do. At the moment it’s compulsion and that’s not Labor’s position."

"Employment services contracts have become a prized revenue-generating asset. Not only does Australia’s outsourced system fail to provide appropriate support to the unemployed, it actively diverts public funding to private profit." cictar.org/all-research...
Who benefits from outsourced
“employment services”?
Employment services contracts have become a prized revenue-generating asset. Not
only does Australia’s outsourced system fail to provide appropriate support to the
unemployed, it actively diverts public funding to private profit. The major beneficiaries
of the system set in motion by John Howard are private equity-controlled multinationals
and millionaires who have found a way to build their private empires around profit
extraction from government contracts.
The four case studies included in this report reveal that typical strategies for profit
extraction include accruing government contracts through acquisitions, and maximising
private profits through patterns of aggressive corporate behaviour. This includes
instances of artificially reducing taxable income, adding to the cost of this privatised
system through lost income tax revenue

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

Being barefacedly explicit about the fact that: - She and her cohort consider transition to be a negative outcome in and of itself - They conceptualise the purpose of "talk therapy" as discouraging patients from transitioning - Transness is considered as both 'disabling' and 'unnatural'
A quote from Dr Cass saying "It may be that if they were prescribed puberty blockers instead, that would give more time for the therapist to work with them and perhaps come to a different solution than a long-term life on medication."

By far the biggest problem with delegating judgement to machines is the people who own the machines can tune them towards outcomes they prefer but those who don't own anything can't. It's not the technology. It's a transfer of decision making power from rational accountable systems to capital.

"One Nation supporters are not unique or special. And treating their concerns as though they are more poignant, more precious, is part of a long history of racist scapegoating in this country" www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
There is no question that One Nation supporters are staggering under the weight of economic pressures. But so are we all. It is not clear to me why many media outlets are so keen to privilege the grievances of one segment of Australians over the grievances of others.

Being a Muslim doesn’t protect you from petrol prices, and my skin colour does not make me immune to rent hikes or property prices. As we know the opposite is true – on top of the problems faced by all Aussies, first-generation Australians from non-European backgrounds have a harder time finding jobs and renting homes because of racism.

One Nation supporters are not unique or special. And treating their concerns as though they are more poignant, more precious, is part of a long history of racist scapegoating in this country.

Frame 2: The bus comes, it's wrapped in an ad that also says "STOP HIRING HUMANS." The artist has a blank look.

NACC concludes that Kathryn Campbell didn't lie because she had no motive to They say she had no motive because she was already successful, & wouldn't risk lying for further career advancement. I love it when people with no understanding of greed or hubris run corruption investigations
Possibly, the thinking would be that Ms Campbell thought the result
would find such favour with Minister Morrison as to lead to her
advancement. But quite apart from the speculation inherent in that
kind of reasoning, it is objectively a most unlikely proposition that an
already very senior, career public servant with a long and
unblemished record of achievement and recognition in both the APS

premeditatedly commit the serious criminal offence of deceiving ERC

Cis people need to pay attention to the way they communicate this. They freely admit that after all of their research, they came up with zero evidence that HRT was harmful. Then they banned it anyway, claiming their inability to find a reason is a reason in of itself.
It found there was not enough good quality evidence to conclude overall whether the drugs benefited young people or harmed them, so NHS England will not issue new prescriptions while it continues to consider responses from advocacy groups and healthcare professionals.
