Suddenly, without adding a credit card which somehow proves I'm over 18, I'm no longer allowed to see or buy mature games on Steam. I've been buying games on Steam for over 16 years **with my credit card** 🙄

What a world we live in when proposing to address a cost-of-living crisis and represent public interest rather than vested interest is seen as radical.

Opponents of rent controls typically argue that rent controls would lead to landlords selling up. Of course that presents risks. But it also presents a historic opportunity. Because when a landlord sells, the home does not vanish – only the owner changes!

I have come to realise that our 2-party system is not major left-wing party vs major right-wing party, but Government & Opposition. As soon as the other party is in power, they start doing the very same things they were loudly against about while in Opposition!

Then we might have a chance of policy-making that reflects the public interest, of the dog wagging the tail, of discussion and argument leading to better outcomes, rather than being used as a distraction from the real nature of power. Thank you.

We can spend our lives debating the justifications (I more or less have); but we are wasting our time. What we need is a massive clampdown on the influence of money over politics, including lobbying transparency, campaign finance reform, an end to the revolving door between politics and lobbying.

That’s because the decision has already been made. The issue being debated is merely the post-hoc justification. Where decisions happen and where debate happens are different places. The idea that debate leads to policy outcomes is a fiction designed to create an impression of democratic consent.

Then the government must find a find of selling this policy, which might be very harmful. It will argue that it’s essential for “growth”, “jobs”, “international standing” etc. Opponents will then argue these claims, engaging in the great democratic tradition of “debate”. But debate is irrelevant.

Maybe this is the way forward for the left. Listen and understand the concerns of people outside the big cities. Use language they understand. Not because they're stupid or uneducated. But because we want to communicate with them. Because their concerns are important. They are important too.

Her carer found it too difficult to access NDIS funding (a hospital social worker applied for it). That's the part more people need to understand - getting onto the NDIS is very difficult, and then spending the funding is more difficult again, sometimes bordering on impossible. Often farcical.

This is a great insight from a young woman in Canberra on housing and time and multiculturalism www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...
The woman who feels priced out of spare time

Rosie* is in her 30s and lives in Canberra. She captured the point vividly.

"Housing gets covered as deposits, rates, supply. Living it, the real cost is time. You work the hours the housing demands, in the suburb the housing pushed you to, and what gets sacrificed is the ability to sit down with the people around you.

"Multiculturalism worked in this country when people had time to spend with people unlike themselves. Not policy time — ordinary time. Backyards, front steps, sport, the shops, someone's kitchen. That's how a stranger stops being a category and becomes a neighbour.

"We have spent 30 years pricing that time out of people's lives and now we're surprised that cohesion is fraying and asking what went wrong with our values.

"When people are exhausted and stretched and never in the same room, difference stops being interesting and starts being threatening. That's not a failure of tolerance. It's a failure of time. That's what I'd want people in power to understand."

To put that into dollar terms: Oregon residents are now paying $1.6 billion more for electricity than they were paying just 5 years ago, which comes out to roughly $950 extra per household per year. Alternately, that $611,000 from the pockets of Oregonians each year for each data center job.
