You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

There is never a "one size fits all" in life. The more viable* options available to all, the more likely you are to benefit everyone. *viable: public and accessible public transit that works in practice, rather that be a check mark on a list, for example.

y'all like my shirt? #UglyDogs
a purple t-shirt with vertical pink stripes. Written in white cursive across the pink lines is the text "Pet more dogs & give less fucks". The shirt is being worn by the photographer but the only part of her you can see is her right arm.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

I added a few charms to my bracelet from @peculiarityshop.bsky.social and now I'm so delighted by the tinkly sounds it makes on my wrist I don't ever want to take it off. not pictured, the mini pit bull flat charm. somehow that escaped my camera.
a white woman's arm with a charm bracelet on it. there are a few amethyst beads and a charm of a bundt pan and a tiny elephant. a different view of the charm bracelet showing a to go coffee/tea cup, a circle with a tree engraved on it, and a couple amethyst beads charm bracelet with amethyst beads, a clarinet charm, a tiny prescription bottle, and a book of Rebecca.

My entire life I've heard centrists scolding leftist candidates with "oh, but how will we pay for all that? isn't your agenda unreasonable? shouldn't we run on a modest proposal for means-tested tax rebates?" Then Mamdani gets elected and makes it all look pretty easy. No wonder they hate him.

The left photo is a stock photo showing a Black man working at a laptop with an external monitor above it and a second laptop next to it, all three screens showing Very Important Terminal Code that he's staring intently at with his hands on the keyboard, captioned "multiple redundant systems designed by advanced engineering teams". The right is a yellow JCB backhoe being operated by someone in shadow, perched next to a pile of dirt and in the process of digging up more, captioned "One scrapey boi".

When I search up "average income needed to afford a home in Seattle" I get answers north of 100k/year. You tell me how someone is supposed to fly back and forth from Seattle to DC regularly and maintain two homes in very HCOL areas on 174k a year, because that math isn't mathing for me.
