Excited to be chosen as Leader of the @greens.org.au, together with @stephhodgins-may.bsky.social as Deputy Leader. Now is the time to build the Greens as the home for all who want climate action, a fair return on our resources, a secure home and income, and to not sell out to the US or the 1%.

Australia wants a UN Security Council seat and says it will defend international law. But Albanese condemned Russia while remaining silent on US actions, even after Trump threatened to “annihilate” Iran, David Shoebridge writes. #auspol #UNGA

Australia shouldn’t get a seat at the UN security council
Australia is campaigning for a Security Council seat on a promise to defend international law. Yet Albanese condemned Russia by name while saying nothing comparable about US actions – even after Trump threatened from the same UN stage to “annihilate” Iran.

Still so little information from the Albanese Government over what data they are planning to hand over to Trump. Every level of this Government is just addicted to secrecy. This agreement will cover our information, surely the public should know about negotiations.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used his recent United Nations address to make a pitch for a seat at the Security Council. He highlighted how the world was spinning into conflict, but refused to name the one nation that has been most responsible for this. johnmenadue.com/post/2026/09...

This is why fuel prices are pushing $3 a litre. Because Trump has no idea how to end the war he (and Netanyahu) started with Iran. That’s the war that Labor, the Coalition and One Nation all cheered on in February. It’s the war the Greens opposed. The only party that did.

The world is being torn apart by US aggression, using its military, trade and AI as weapons, and Albanese failed to mention this even once in his UN address. If you cannot even name the problem, why should anyone believe you can address it?

This is an extraordinary act of direct foreign interference by the US embassy in domestic Australian politics. The Australian government should publicly respond by rejecting efforts by the US embassy to dictate how Australia legislates for a digital duty of care.

Why are Labor prioritising debate on the "Regulatory Reform Omnibus" today when AI catastrophic risk is becoming more and more apparent. It's time to step up and start dealing with it!
Greens call for debate on frontier AI models that ‘may make us extinct’

The Greens have gone from zero to a hundred in the Senate this morning, immediately moving to suspend standing orders to push the government to debate and legislate safety testing and transparency on frontier AI systems that could make us go extinct.

Senator David Shoebridge is moving the motion which also calls for the government to push for a global treaty on AI regulation with middle powers, including Canada, Singapore and France.

He tells the Senate the government could legislate an “ethical AI industry” that constrains the frontier model.

This morning Sam Altman and Elon Musk called for the sector to pump the breaks on “reckless” AI development

OpenAI boss and Elon Musk back calls to put brakes on ‘reckless’ AI development

Shoebridge says:

I’ll tell you what the Greens think we should be talking about, not the Regulatory Reform Omnibus Bill, but the fact that major players from the AI industry across the world are saying we need to slow down development of frontier models because it may make us extinct …

I can’t believe anyone would vote against this motion, and I can’t believe Labor would say ‘no we don’t want to deal with an extinction risk’.
