Wanna see all the movies explored in my new book STRANDED ON EARTH: HOW NIGHT SKIES BECAME E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL? Here they are, in order of importance. Covers a lot of ground but you have to read the book to find out how it all fits together! Pre-order from @1984prods.bsky.social for Oct. 27!

...except for those who find it hard to look away from something that took hopeful young actors and ground them into dust for a bunch of movies that weren't made to appeal to anyone. It's a complicated and unpleasant thing to feel.

The full essay is fantastic and worth reading. It's a great exploration of something so mundane and uninteresting, with such a short lifespan, that the fact they continue to be available when other works are lost is hard to grapple with. Few people cared when they were made, and nobody cares now...

They are, as Coldiron puts it, intentionally disposable, relevant to only a flash moment before 1950 and not even particularly good at anything they're trying to do there. People are weirdly fascinated with them as a result; I didn't think they'd be so easy to find. But they still are.

She discusses this series of films, eight of which were churned out between 1946 and 48 by a Poverty Row studio, and which starred "diminutive, fully adult actors" as high school teens- at a time before the term "teenager" had become widespread and just before media actually started exploring it.

I'm planning on passing @ferrifrigida.bsky.social 's book JUNK FILM on to another cult movie buff who will definitely appreciate it but first I wanted to make sure I had my watchlist filled out with movies that she discusses. And that's how I discovered that several Teen Agers movies are on Prime.

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job. Think about that in context of

I looked up the Big Twist of Digger, because I had no interest in seeing it, and... now I kind of want to see it. I appreciate how big of a swing Iñárritu took, and the advertising undersold how clever it (potentially) is. Hard to get past whatever's gonna happen with that cat, though.

Production design has some great concepts, and there's some really good nightmares... but it's also very much a low-budget horror from 2000, and it feels like it. More interesting than the last two entries in the franchise but less fun. Definitely better than Bloodlines, at least.

This is very much in MST3K territory of having some really good ideas and lousy execution of them. I love the idea of a detective following a case down a path to hell, but holy shit does this character garner zero good will, being an insufferable too-clever-for-his-own-good asshole from the start.

This is less than it could be but a solid "haunted house in space" movie that takes from Alien, Hellraiser, Solaris, and more, and feels more like it's lovingly using those influences to build something new. Also the 2021 release from Scream Factory looks astonishing. Crisp as hell.

I grabbed this from the video store because it had special features and I wanted to see some of that lost footage. There's not much of it- three scenes, really- but it's super cool to see what they were able to get.

Okay listen I might be too angry about this but please tell me I'm not the only one annoyed with this
From my Facebook:

"Why the fuck does my email app have a streak tracker? Why are you trying to incentivize checking my email?

I'll check my email when there's something to look at, I'm not gonna log in just to get a little animation congratulating me for opening the app five days in a row. It's barely functional compared to what it used to be anyways, with more ads and an apparent inability to show me all of my unread emails.

Why would I log in more often? What motivation to I have to pay for any of this?

What the fuck are we even doing here?"

Followed by the comment

"Yes I've had coffee, fuck you"

The rush to accuse, without anything approaching due diligence, artists of using "AI," should be treated with contempt. An artist gets their work *ripped off* to train a plagiarism machine, which then shits out inferior versions of that work, so then you accuse the artist of using "AI"? Fuck you.

I just read a third or possibly fourth news article where the reality of an 'AI has discovered something marvellous!' story turns out to be GenAI somehow accessed material it had no permissions for, which was the outcome of an expert's years of work, and presented it without attribution. GenAI lies.
