Excerpt from from Marooned Off Ceres.

So, there we were, walking through the centre of town. Mother had allowed me to paint her shell with a rainbow for the occasion and she looked very snazzy. I had blue, pink and white stripes on my cheek and lesbian flag-coloured nails. It was lots of fun. Loud and joyous and, frankly, queer as fuck. Emma was there as well, walking along beside me, unseen by anyone else. As we passed by the War Memorial, she turned to me, a look of fear on her face.
‘There’s somebody with a gun,’ she said. ‘He’s going to shoot me—I mean, Mother.’
