the year is 2030 and i no longer consume anything that isn't personalized to me. every game, every book, every movie extends to the limits of my own imagination and no further. i haven't been surprised in five years. i cry softly, in bewilderment, if i see a word i don't know

It's just weird isn't it when the British Museum is running a sold-out exhibition, when The Odyssey reports $1billion at the box office, when the V&A has just opened the most innovative and accessible museum model in Europe....and this is what our minister for research comes out with.

What a beautiful gift he was. Feeling so grateful and broken today.
screen shot of Tim Curry performing as Dr. Frank N. Furter in the movie adaptation of rocky horror picture show. This in one of the final scenes when the character is giving a dramatic goodbye to the planet earth. He is wet and bedraggles from a previous pool scene but still impossibly glamorous and magnetic. He is dramatically lit from behind by a powerful bluish stage light.

I have to say, it's making me feel a little insane hearing commentators say Ed Miliband shouldn't be chancellor because of his "ideological zeal" for Net Zero, in a week where temperatures are so extreme that my kids are being sent home early every day and it's regularly 30 degrees inside my house

Lynda Barry did not squeeze your heart and simultaneously explain the point of all art with the barest of line drawings so you could tell me that AI is "inevitable."
HOW TO LOOK AT ART by Lynda Barry

In the first panel, a dog-headed woman, a mother, looks at a painting in the "Madonna with Baby Jesus" vein. A small blobby child is standing next to her.

Mother: IM NOT SURE HOW TO LOOK AT ART.
Child: WHATS SPOSTA HAPPEN?

In the second panel the dog-headed mother holds up her hands (paws?) trying to explain to the child.

Mother: SOMETHING BIG. A REVELATION.
SUDDENLY YOU JUST UNDERSTAND.

In the third panel dog-headed mother goes back to looking at the painting. The child holds up their arms to be lifted.

Mother: NOT SURE HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
Child: HOW BOUT LIFT ME UP SO I CAN SEE BETTER

In the last panel, the dog-headed mother is holding the child, their position mirrored by the Madonna and baby Jesus in the painting.

A lot of our discourse seems to assume that 1) these wrong beliefs somehow arise naturally and 2) politicians have a duty to behave as if these wrong beliefs are true. It saves asking questions about old and new media, or doing anything brave, but it’s rotting our society and economy.

One of the few positives of AI is that now making mistakes (like starting a piece on a page with an ink stain from the page before it) and all of the other messy imperfections just become something that ensures the viewer an actual human made it Or at least that’s what I tell myself anyway
A spiral sketchbook with a graphite sketch of a skull with its mouth open and dripping some sort of goo. Mushrooms sprout out from several spaces towards the top of it, including one of the eye sockets [left eye]. A faded orangey-brown ink stain appears in the left bottom quadrant of the page. Stray marks and smudges throughout, etc

Academia should have more and better jobs, of course, but insofar as it currently doesn’t, nobody should be beating themselves up. Moreover, the outside is actually pretty nice for most people, and there are many places to use what you learned to do.

Getting a PhD and then working outside academia is dope. My advisees who’ve done that are more or less uniformly happy and feel that they’re using the skills they trained on. (I talked to one today who just landed a great gig). Just wanted to convey that to anyone it might benefit.

So, thing that is apparently better understood inside academia than outside of it: International students pay sticker price. Most domestic students do not. International students are subsidizing the education costs for domestic students, as per student governmental funding drops.

I’m reading War and Peace, and you know, probably a lot more people would read it if they knew just how extremely cunty the dialogue is
“Vera,” said the countess, turning to her older daughter, obviously not her favorite. “How is it you have no notion of anything?”

War and Peace

Why has fate given you two such nice children (excluding Anatole, your youngest, I don’t like him),” she put in peremptorily, raising her eyebrows, “such lovely children? And you really value them less than anyone and are therefore unworthy of them.”
And she smiled her rapturous smile.”

It doesn't happen every year, but sometimes we get some blue sky during the few precious days between our magnolia flowering and spring hailstorms tearing it to bits. And it's like having a celebrity in the front garden.
A mature Magnolia tree covered in white-and-pink flowers, in sunshine, against a clear blue sky.

Please don't ask me why my brain works like this, because I don't have an answer

MOBY GOT DICK
By Josephine Riesman

I hate white whales and I cannot lie
You other seamen can't deny
When the beast swims by as a pale and eerie sight
Spermacetti is your right
You get sprung
Wanna throw spears well
Til you know that the whale's in Hell

Oh, Moby
I wanna stop goonin'
And get harpoonin'
My boatswain tried to stop this
But that eye you got makes
(Me so vicious!)

Ooh, Devil’s own whale
You say you wanna end my tale?
Well, try me, try me
Cuz I ain’t no average briney

I’ve seen him blowin’
To hell with all knowin’
He swim, fin
Got it goin’ like a turbo Schwinn

I’m tired of novelists
Sayin’ orcas are the best
Take the average Ahab and ask him why
I’ll tell ya I’m not shy

So sailors (YEAH!)
Sailors (YEAH!)
Has your whale-foe got the white? (HELL YEAH!)
Tell him to fluke it (FLUKE IT!)
Fluke it (FLUKE IT!)

Now throw that sharpened stick
Moby got Dick
