Chris Abani 💙 An “ordinary” Wednesday poem for #weirdpoemwednesday! @tomsnarsky.bsky.social
Poet of an Ordinary Heartbreak

Who hasn't been tempted by the sharp edge of a knife?
An ordinary knife cutting ordinary tomatoes on an ordinary slab of wood on an ordinary Wednesday.
The knife nicks, like a bite to the soul. A reminder that what is contemplated is as real as the blood sprouting from a finger. As real as a bruised eye.
Instead turn back to the meat stewing on the stove.
Scrape pulpy red flesh into the heat and turn.
Say: even this is a prayer. Even this.

Soft Machinery

Drowned lilies in a basin behind chapel doors.
The feeling of a snail crawling down the throat.

Of history, is it the metaphor or the body that dies?
The float of seasons, a widening orbit, the book older and stranger.

Standard are the ways we hurt each other, however slowly it may make us.

For when you reach rock bottom

You have survived everything you have been through, and you will survive this too. Stay for the person you will become. You are more than a bad day, or week, or month, or year, or even decade. You are a future of multifarious possibility. You are another self at a point in future time looking back in gratitude that this lost and former you held on. Stay.

We were so poor I had to take the place of the
bait in the mousetrap. All alone in the cellar, I could hear them pacing upstairs, tossing and turning in their beds. "These are dark and evil days," the mouse told me as he nibbled my ear. Years passed. My mother wore a cat-fur collar which she stroked until its sparks lit up the cellar.

Dream the Night My Brother Dies

Whichever way I turn there is a door.
I run in and out of the doors.
In one room, inconsolable weeping.
In another, a sad animal regards me.
In a third, a hole in the floor.
I lower my bucket
a long way down on its white rope.

Among the Presidents there is one President named Huh. I notice him immediately. His black coat is soft and frayed. If in his graying beard is one half-written poem folded up many times, I won't be surprised at all. He picks his best last. I linger, though I shouldn't, as he opens his suitcase. Nothing but dustpans. He stacks them carefully beside his bed. He sees me seeing. Dustpans. It's unquestionably a hearty collection.

I said what I meant
but I said it

in velvet. I said it in feathers.
And so one poet reminded me

Remember what you are to them.

Poodle, I said.

And remember what they are to you.

“I have learned to take apart this American Songbook.” A poem by Cedar Sigo.
Now I'm a Woman

BY CEDAR SIGO

When you hear the knives ring
Turn the page.
I wonder why I am not
Myself of late, ridiculous glass edges
Turn back on themselves
And soon reveal
The hand of an apprentice
And godforsaken embarrassing torch,
Stormy back hallways
Out of the black and wooden theatres.
Crystal Waters plus her driver
Plus her entourage is still rolling out
Of the Sands, Atlantic City
On the soundtracks to shows
Held over at The Fairmount
She is throwing back shots
With the mafia. I have learned
To take apart this American Songbook
And very fortunately as I would take
My audience in confidence
Threads of gold fall closely together
Coming to break us off.
At the first of the shows
I sang this song
And in between I saw him in the hall,
What could I tell you?
"Someday we'll build on a hilltop high."

what do your poems contain? what do they not contain? what can their stomachs digest? where must they swim? how do they cry?
American Poetry
by Louis Simpson

Whatever it is, it must have
A stomach that can digest
Rubber, coal, uranium, moons, poems.

Like the shark it contains a shoe.
It must swim for miles through the desert
Uttering cries that are almost human.
