poem in the summer issue of @thimblelitmag.bsky.social --
The Forest of a Million Trees Goes Quiet as We Walk

Our presence here silences
the sounds we came to hear.
Chases the animals
we set out to join
in our shared hunger.
What we thought the moon
is not the moon.
Our first night together;
already the end of us
written in spaces we don’t know
how to fill: emptiness
where birdsong should be.

Saskia Hamilton—
Another Stupid Party
I had to stand at the other end of the room and talk to a hundred other people.
My longing for him trailed after me and although its nature had not changed, its agency had,
as if it were the angel whispering at the back of my head, and if I turned I would see, on the floor behind me, that we held each other, we kept insisting, always working towards the end of the story,
his breath on me the weight of the dream Thad in which I kissed him and felt a skittish animal slip in.
Tomorrow I'm going to do something about it.After Catullus

You wicked girl, to have wanted him at all.
Does he know this? What if he knew this?

This fantasy that “AI is out of control” provides cover for powerful people and corporations to simply program systems to carry out actions and then shrug. And if that is brought into the larger scheme of operations, the powerful will shrug and blame the tool they control.

"Certain events of love drew my body nearer to meaning." This beautiful poem 'The Anxiety of Meaning' by Bianca Stone in The Glacier 🤍 @42milespress.bsky.social theglacierjournal.com/issue-three/... #poetrycommunity #poetry
The Anxiety of Meaning

Bianca Stone

Certain events of love
drew my body nearer to meaning.

All poets are liars.
Wrecked against meaning. Starved
on the beach of meaning—

I want to keep your head in a black bag, I said.

Who can distinguish the remembered
from the desired? I know a little
the agony of it. I drew nearer still.

What do I know about getting?
I know my mother turned away.
That I slipped from her body again and again,
tied down in an incubator and punctured
with a life-saving light.

I know that all that time
an ancient poem
was writing itself in the
hallway, where a mask hung on the wall
looking without seeing.

I know I turned away. Can you feel it?
How the head longs to rid the face
of a certain danceless dance. That we were

condemned to dualism at birth.
Dualism is dead.
And long live dualism.

That certain events of love
drew us nearer to mean.
That the heart is chilled
by a tormented wave

that thinks it is not the sea.

This is the core philosophy that undergirds my own approach to worldbuilding. Every world (including the one we live in right now!) is built of complex, interacting systems. Worldbuilding is choosing which systems to feature, how closely to examine them, and how to weigh their products and outcomes.

And Suddenly It's the first of the Month

you mail the rent check,
watch jasmine blossoms fall from the bush
magnolias open like saucers from fine porcelain place settings.
How much longer will we decide to love one another?
An ex once told me if I ever left him for another man he would wish us the best, then take everything in our motherfucking house
-and torch it.
Take this view of the rose of Sharon at the far end of the porch Take this crumpled paper napkin, this cork.
How much can any of us carry?
Just yesterday, a great blue heron alighted on the cottonwood
at the end of Jim's yard,
right near Boggy Creek, right in the middle of our barbecue, big wings hovering on the smallest of branches.
And all of us, even the children, turned from the fire to watch it.

I finally sat down and wrote an email to the Talarico campaign. Doing nothing felt untenable. I encourage other decent Texans to communicate their disappointment. If this can help you get started, feel free to use anything that works for you
To

info@JamesTalarico.com

Disappointment

I hope I am just one of many communications you receive expressing extreme disappointment with the campaign's position regarding transgender children.

Just as it is unacceptable for the government to insert itself between women and their doctors, it is equally unacceptable for the government to insert itself between children and their doctors and parents. Supporting a bill to ban gender related surgery in children ignores the fact that this is not government's place. And coming out for exceptions to transgender children participating in sports is equally unforgivable. There are no safety issues with transgender children playing that aren't also there with cisgender children. Same with fairness issues. Accepting the premise that transgender children aren't just regular children is ceding ground to the fascists who wish to remove all trans 0 people from daily life. I am so deeply disappointed in Mr Talarico and the entire campaign for allowing this framing to stand unchallenged and for the stand he has taken against the transgender community.

You may still get my vote in November, but you will not get my labor in the very hard ground game that needs to be fought. I simply can't fight for a candidate that won't fight for all of us.

Sincerely,

Lisa Seger Waller, TX

You can let it off its leash… Poem by Doug Anderson #smallpoemsunday @tomsnarsky.bsky.social
THE HARD, HARD THING
You don't get over it in spite
of wonderpill, don't get
to lay your burden down.
But you can find a place for it
beside a river, in a flowering field.
You can let it off its leash
where it's not as like to bite
another's hurt, but wander,
drink deep, or sleep in the sun,
head resting on your shoulder.
