Today on Glass! "Negation Variation 11" by Heikki Huotari! www.glass-poetry.com/journal.html
Heikki Huotari

Negation Variation 11

Typically we'd manifest as carnivores while strewing tools of long forgotten and or yet to be initiated trades. We'd hold our breath and pass the polygraph and so would you. If in the velodrome we'd wail and gnash, at home we wouldn't have to. Every celebration has a cause for its existence, i.e., celebrations don't just happen, i.e., each is caused by some one or some thing. As codependent as a service dog is on its astronaut, I'm sleeping in an umbra, and as accurately as ordained. The broken bottle is half full. As I'm a once and future optimist, an astral body and a useful fool, so from the circle of convergence to the circle of diversity I'm teleporting a miscellany of quantum states, e.g., the ennui of an octopus, e.g., the eight legs of a crow. One paints oneself into a corner, one clings to a cliff and subsequently situational awareness is imagination's bane. The ratio of the height of the human pyramid to the base of the human pyramid is constant, is as constant in New Jersey as it is in Florida, world without end, amen.

Today on Glass! "No Rain But Today" by Angela Gabrielle Fabunan! www.glass-poetry.com/journal.html
Angela Gabrielle Fabunan

No Rain But Today

          after Julia Alvarez
          for Addie de los Santos

I once said drying in the sun
is a fixed destination.
Rethought now to say
it's of a manmade process.
The smoke out north would be black
in this inferno.
The tides, as I adjust the viewfinder,
still do churn.
The photograph arrives:
old boardwalk, young face;
sticky-sweet smell;
sun and sea on metal signposts;
a soot-covered wall;
all the steel hills in silver mills,
your melted sandwich,
and your elementary school.
Inside, the table is set for two
but accommodates four.
I shut my camera off, decide,
nothing here to capture
in this familiar restaurant,
in books that taste of dirt.
But good timing,
the water no one has kissed lately.
As if sun-dried means wine-red,
as if it can be simple.
As if this poem is blue lips
in an old, familiar, famine.

Today on Glass! "Nothing to See Here" by Melissa Fite Johnson (@mfitejohnson.bsky.social)! www.glass-poetry.com/journal.html
Melissa Fite Johnson

Nothing to See Here

No sea to hear, just flat Kansas plains. Middle of somewhere,
a girl’s T-shirt once said, and I smiled as we crossed paths
in our small Midwest town. I loved that T-shirt

as much as I hate my mother’s that says Life is good,
because she doesn’t mean it, it’s just nice to say.
Like Thank God. Middle of somewhere reminded me

of my uncle the artist who once visited from Providence,
which I might write even if it weren’t true, the symbolism
too perfect. But that’s where he lived, what he gave me

while his wife and my mother — sisters — fought. To escape,
we took a drive. When I apologized for the plain plains,
believing the Kansas flyover myth, he called it

the bluest sky he’d ever seen. He went on and on about
wheat fields. I couldn’t name one beautiful thing in my life,
but he wanted to paint every abandoned barn. Something to see here.

Today on Glass! "Independence Pass" by Steph Sundermann-Zinger! www.glass-poetry.com/journal.html
Steph Sundermann-Zinger

Independence Pass

Six weeks after my father’s death, I am standing
above the treeline where two points of the world meet,

the wind twisting my hair into a child’s
thicket of knots. Patches of snow

cling to a bygone season, the rest having slipped
into a vernal pool thick with midges, fairy shrimp, protozoa

filmy as December breath. Snow will fall again here,
enough to close the Pass, to spit and swallow itself

down the mountain in great, roaring mouthfuls. For now,
the rocks are alive with gentians, daisies,

alpine yellowcress. I wonder if their roots
drink from two oceans, ponder the confusion of a moon

hanging over this place where one thing
joins another, the pull of divergent tides. My children

look like chess pieces in their black windbreakers,
hoods up, mouths open, sucking in lungfuls

of needle-thin air. Never having had a father,
they don’t understand the loss of one, although

they hug me when I ask, and press small tokens
into my hands—a heart-shaped stone, violet scribble

of wildflowers—gifts from this ragged hill
that stands forever in two places, and survives.

Today on Glass! "City and Soul" by Rikki Santer! www.glass-poetry.com/journal.html
Rikki Santer

City and Soul

Once I lived in the lap of an alley
     that opened into the wingspan
of a parking lot. It was
the syntax of this city corridor

that nudged me that summer.
     Ivy caligraphy preened the countenance
          of rhyming apartment buildings,
               vines of Black-eyed Susans embraced

stubborn chain link. And every morning,
a library of noise — parrot mic’d up
on its balcony, high heels clicking
               alongside delivery truck groans.

But most of all it was the rivulets
of grass and dandelions in the toothy
     cracks of concrete reminding me
of what can be invisible until it’s not.

I named the pigeon Bartleby,
     loitering for bagel bits
          at my downtown office window.
                The iridescence of its neck

led me, too often, to daydream
     for sprouted wings launching me
from the sill to glide above skyscraper spikes
               and hard-faced glass —

this city a forest that could eat you.
Dusk and take-out at a park bench,
          the spangling of fireflies, champions
               after the heat, the congestion,

the monotony. Constellations of sparrows
chattering in the oaks, squirrels vogue
with T-rex paws for peanuts, cartography
of lawns patched with cigarette butts

and the rocks were the rocks.
Another morning at First and Gay.
I wait beside a leafy sycamore
               for the light to change.

Silhouette of an electric man in a box
     beckons me with his flashing,
          and then the questioning eyes
               of a studious man, facefull

of smile. The clove
     of his after shave.
          The green light.
               This love poem.

Love spell to remain

          after Lynda Hull, Mitski

Thinking of boys on a balcony in the old part of Seoul.
Thinking of their thudless boiling points, tipping over.
Thinking of circling back. To losing. To being a loser.
Sitting there on that twin wicker chair, in the open air of love.
Thinking of audiences, shimmering blue in their shellacked faces.
Those sinuous, beating earrings, hanging, falling fast with their wavy legs.
Afterwards, God, sifting through the last ceiling rafter, left above. Spinning. Thinking.
Thinking, of you. Insinuating lateness. This thunderless heat.
Too little, too late. Surprising me anyways.
