I suspect a lot of the outrage at the footage comes from the fact that most people, including the political and media class, have no idea how roughly police treat suspects, including the innocent and those not resisting arrest

The target market for online radicalisation is people who are bad at getting out and doing stuff, hanging out with people, being affable, so it's hard to make it work into the real world.

Every crime in which an ethnic or cultural minority is the perpetrator used to justify repression or worse of minorities. Every crime in which a minority is the victim used to argue for the idea that ethnic diversity is inherently unstable and should be reduced or eradicated.

He is the one the prophecies spoke of
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

Interesting that the idea of another EU referendum is regularly discussed on broascast media as something that would cause division and thus a bad idea. But plans to deport literally millions of people are discussed as administrative questions.

Labour's processes for changing leader are hopelessly, catastrophically unsuited to government. More than half of all prime ministers since 1945 have taken over between general elections. This is not an unusual procedure. So it really matters when parties screw this system up... 🧵

The ability to buy anything on account of having too much money wrecks a person's brain just like a zero-gravity environment destroys muscle mass and bone density. Human bodies are designed for resistance and they liquefy rapidly without it.
Billionaire Marc Andreessen says he has "zero" introspection, and that the idea itself is a modern invention.CNN: Peter Thiel, the billionaire venture capitalist and MAGA donor, is in Rome this week for a series of private lectures on the Antichrist. It’s an event that the Vatican, and the pope, are treating with caution.

It still shocks me every day that the boundary between this sort of slurry and the ‘mainstream’ right in this county has completely collapsed. And that there has been so little pushback. I fear for the future.

Possible confounder here is Starmer's reverse midas touch. Can he negatively polarise the country into supporting a disastrous intervention in the Middle East? I'm sure he'll give it a good go.

"We either shape events or they shape us," is the psychology underpinning the British right's conniptions this week. For a certain personality type, bold action (however daft and reckless) is the antidote to fear and uncertainty.

I depressingly think this might become the new normal in 'multipolarity'. minimal boots on the ground, no even pretense at nation building, just an occasional 'fuck you' bombing campaign that kills top leadership and has the explicit intent of destabilization.

An extraordinary paragraph. buff.ly/uH5ykhX
The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they're the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesivebecause of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about "Western civilization," while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

I'll say it again: if any other ethnic or religious minority said "please don't use this particular term or chant, you might not have bad intentions but it is deeply racist and threatening to us", the reaction would be mortified apology. And that's without a mass terror event four days ago

An underappreciated aspect is that many people *want* to go through life with clearly-defined roles for everything. Much less anxiety-inducing than making choices and running the risk of ridicule. Liberal individualism is one of the best things to ever happen, but some people feel it as a burden.

One of the things I always find telling is the idea that we have to judge past people by the standards of their time, as if the fact that they did bad things means that everyone thought it was okay. They didn't. Pretty much every obviously evil act had people saying that it was, in fact, bad.
