AI companies made an imaginary friend who you talk to all day and are addicted to and now they can pitch big clients on "hey we got all these people on the hook and can push them to buy your product or vote for your guy and they'll trust the message because it's coming from their friend"

the Heroic Protector Fantasy is rarely of real use to women, it's just wish fulfillment about male posturing and it frequently exacerbates violence it's also much easier to imagine yourself kicking the ass of an obviously villainous stranger than to to actually intervene where you have influence

Don’t believe people who tell you ai can be liberatory or any other misappropriation of movement talk or justice frameworks. Find some people who are preparing to rebuild and cast your lot with them. Then read a bit more. Just keep your wits about you because they are trying to run game.

Great bit here from Bodies of Learning worth quoting at length: "It is as if school teaching deliberately sets out to attempt to colonise virgin territory in the brain (that doesn't actually exist), and to treat embodied feelings, motivations and experiences with suspicion."
In the light of these revelations, it looks odd, then, to devise a system of education that seems hell-bent on ignoring, and hence weakening, the connective tissue that links body and mind. It is as if school teaching deliberately sets out to attempt to colonise virgin territory in the brain (that doesn't actually exist), and to treat embodied feelings, motivations and experiences with suspicion.

It is perfectly valid to want to encourage children to extend their horizons beyond those of their particular families and cultures, but the way to do that, from an embodied perspective, is to grow outwards from that personal experience, not to neglect it and, by implication, denigrate it. Knowledge learned without a meaningful context is harder to engage with, and risks being left emotionally ungrounded, unanchored and harder to access.

The last few years have been very difficult for the fight to keep books in jails and prisons, as a "drugs on paper" narrative gained traction and enabled waves of facilities to eliminate access to free, physical books and push $$$$$ tablets. This victory for readers is so needed and so valuable.

Several of the activities Ben reports here would appear to be violations of child labor law in some states. The curriculum is cruelty. These students are being trained to expect cruelty, to engage in cruelty, & to regard cruelty as rationality, as the normal functioning of a “meritocratic” society.

There is robust academic literature about how selective groups -- cults, gangs, franternities -- make use of “shame and stigma” rituals that include deliberately demeaning initiations so as to enhance commitment to the in-group and its norms. I believe Alpha School is doing this.

Here is @lutzfernandez.bsky.social:
Most of what I have to say about this is unpublishable. If the teenagers at this school are being subject to much of what has been posted on Twitter via the Alpha Schools account, someone there needs to be reminded that teenagers are children. They are not soldiers in an army, they are not adults at a business school, they are not workers in a pressure cooker environment.

I spent 10 years on Wall Street in mergers and acquisitions, and my 20- and 30-something colleagues and I were not treated as these students appear to be. Especially dark is the biometric monitoring, which sounds like something a CIA trainee would be subjected to. Students in “normal” schools face serious pressure to achieve and are increasingly over-surveilled. This takes those elements to a new and unheard of level – and especially if the leaders of Alpha School aim to influence how schooling is done across the United States, I’m profoundly disturbed.

Just a reminder that kitchens started out as large rooms for an entire staff of servants to prepare meals, and then the Frankfurt kitchen turned that into a one-woman job, hidden away, so all men had to see was a woman emerging with a cooked meal, and then the open concept floor plan made that ugly.

of all the things it’s important for students first encountering early modern history to know about early modern history, the limitations of generative AI is not one of them if it comes up, it can only be as a more or less necessary distraction, like an old projector or an order to shelter in place

Cocaine is one of the most widely abused illicit substances in the world, with an estimated 41 million adults reporting lifetime use in the United States alone (Gangu et al., 2022).
It has well-documented cardiovascular effects, including hypertension, tachycardia,
and vasoconstriction,
and these
have long been associated with acute ischemic events affecting the heart and brain. A less recognized capability is the drug's capacity to precipitate ischemia of the spinal cord, a resulting complication that is both debilitating and repeatedly underdiagnosed. Cocaine-induced acute spinal cord ischemia (ASCI) can result in immediate and permanent paralysis, complete loss of sensation below the level of injury, and autonomic dysfunction affecting bladder and bowel function. This kind of injury is devastating enough to leave patients dependent on lifelong rehabilitative care.

Cocaine is a bad, bad drug that a lot of people use. In the United States about 41 million adults have used cocaine at once. Cocaine is bad for your heart.
Can cause big problems. It can make your heart beat fast and your blood pressure go up. This can cause problems with your heart and brain.. Cocaine can also cause problems with your spinal cord. This can lead to bad injuries that can leave you paralyzed. You might not be able to feel anything below the injury. You might have problems with your bladder and bowel. This kind of injury is very serious. Can require a lot of care for the rest of your life.
A lot of doctors and people do not know about …

There *is* an urgent need for evidence-based reform in schools...just not what has been accepted and promoted as "evidence-based" practice.
Ironically, however, the current machinery of schooling and the judgements that underpin it are often deeply inconsistent with research evidence and detrimental to some students' learning. The curriculum assumption that all students in a grade are about equally ready for the same learning is not supported by evidence. Assessing all students against the same learning expectations regardless of where they are in their learning and assigning A to E grades flies in the face of what is known from research about how to engage and motivate students and build self-confidence as learners. There is an urgent need for evidence-based reform of the machinery of schooling.
