It's actually kinda wild how disruptive the sheer amount of rain has been. 2nd wettest September on record for the Des Moines area. All of my kids' outdoor events are canceled, they even canceled the Girl Scouts Mud Run!

Take of the Day #2: Any education reform needs to start with doubling the number of teachers so that class size is 16-18 and each MS/HS teacher is responsible for 90 students MAX (+ pay them MIN $75K).That’s what rich people in cities like NYC are paying $75K per year for and what all kids deserve.

Great bit here from Bodies of Learning worth quoting at length: "It is as if school teaching deliberately sets out to attempt to colonise virgin territory in the brain (that doesn't actually exist), and to treat embodied feelings, motivations and experiences with suspicion."

In the light of these revelations, it looks odd, then, to devise a system of education that seems hell-bent on ignoring, and hence weakening, the connective tissue that links body and mind. It is as if school teaching deliberately sets out to attempt to colonise virgin territory in the brain (that doesn't actually exist), and to treat embodied feelings, motivations and experiences with suspicion.

It is perfectly valid to want to encourage children to extend their horizons beyond those of their particular families and cultures, but the way to do that, from an embodied perspective, is to grow outwards from that personal experience, not to neglect it and, by implication, denigrate it. Knowledge learned without a meaningful context is harder to engage with, and risks being left emotionally ungrounded, unanchored and harder to access.

It's exactly because of what it says about American values that it's important for public school defenders not to dismiss questions of how much it costs and why. Certainly not every dollar is justified, but the price we pay for public ed is largely the cost of constitutionality.

My wife is a teacher and I’m a letter carrier. We both love our jobs and feel adequately compensated for the most part, but we also both have endless stories of how difficult providing service to 100% of the population is. Not the same as what private business is doing In my view.
