Mayor Wilson’s proposed 2027 budget hides SPD surveillance costs, Community Not Cameras Coalition says
by Hannah Saunders Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson dropped her 2027 proposed budget, and leftist activists across the city are pushing back against the increase in Seattle Police Department (SPD) funding. Most recently, the Community Not Cameras Coalition, whose members helped get Mayor Wilson elected, highlighted how the budget hides SPD surveillance costs while upping the funds for cameras before audits on their effectiveness have been released.

A big failure. The argument about streaming the traffic cameras into the real-time crime center was that all the feeds were publicly available anyway, a fact that we now know to be untrue. That this happened at all erodes public trust in city government, and in surveillance cameras specifically.

Juarez was also a major proponent of a $160M new North Precinct for the SPD, "the most expensive precinct building in United States history." A militarized, fortified luxury bunker. (We blocked it). Remember the Bunker when she tries to pull some shady shit on this year's budget
The Seattle police are in the news again. This time for a lavish new $160 million North Precinct building that The Seattle Times’ Brier Dudley claims is the most expensive precinct building in United States history. The epic structure contains a 106,082-square-foot precinct house straddling a 241,019-square-foot parking garage. In other words, the complex is 70% parking.

Community speakers urge Seattle to shift money from cameras to violence‑interruption programs
Multiple public commenters told the council that CCTV and real‑time crime centers have weak evidence for preventing violent crime and urged redirecting funds (including a previously passed $250,000 amendment) to community violence‑interruption and care programs; a cybersecurity reviewer warned of data‑control risks with vendor platforms.

“Arts Not Ops,” open letter to Seattle City Council demands arts and culture investments to combat public safety issues
by Hannah Saunders Anti-surveillance activists and community members are banding together once more under an open letter to the Seattle City Council, titled "Arts Not Ops," to encourage elected officials to invest in arts and culture instead of CCTV cameras. The group highlighted Seattle's historic murder-free June, which they believe is due to the Office of Arts and Culture's $3.6 million investment in neighborhood activation for the World Cup.

I'm actually just going to quote Rob Saka at length politicizing the death of a young person to suggest that police cameras (as opposed to the many cameras that are in place at Seattle Center already) would have prevented her death, because it's pretty outrageous.

Maritza Rivera referred to an increase in the number of people working in the police department's real time crime center (which monitors police surveillance cameras) as an effort to "eliminate the real time crime center." In reality, as SPD's budget director explained, it's an expansion to 24 hours.

And I need to mock Rob Saka for bellowing "turn on the damn cameras!!" at Seattle Center. The cameras at Seattle Center are turned on. However, there are no POLICE cameras at Seattle Center (the ones Saka was demanding someone turn on), so it would not be possible to meet this demand.

One of the big debates over Seattle mayor Katie Wilson's budget will be police department funding. Her budget reduces civilian staffing by 24 (the number added under Harrell in 2025) while funding 66 net officers likely to be hired next year while keeping overall staffing otherwise unchanged.
