a lot of people want to believe that right-wing beliefs are rooted in some legitimate material grievance. that makes it easier to imagine that if we simply solved the material problem, they’d deradicalize. but they won’t, because they aren’t disillusioned, they’re just morons.

I’m not saying AI is good or bad, just that, transparently, it’s both. Anyone who insists it is solely one or the other has exited the realm of useful discourse. It’s like that old chestnut: Much of the time, when people say they hate tech what they mean is they hate (America’s brand of) capitalism

one thing ive noticed when talking to most centrists and moderates is that if you can get them to stop playing pretend political consultant and focusing on what hypothetical voters want, and instead get them to articulate policy they support, they are far more progressive than they realize

one interesting thing so far about loudly hating AI is the way AI lovers are like "wow so you're just totally closed off to hearing another perspective??" as if their perspective hasn't been relentlessly pushed down our throats with no space to push back (particularly in professional settings)

Unfortunately a bunch of Dems are going to make a lot of noise about toning down the rhetoric when they should be holding up a mirror to Republicans and reminding them of who is actually generating the violent rhetoric. (You don’t hear any Republicans calling for bipartisanship and comity do you? )

I think a big part of the derangement of the average American is that they see people on their phone who are lying about how successful they are, believe that they're telling the truth, and then get mad that they aren't that successful right now.

There is no way to read Harper's work on this and come away with a clear sense that Trump was *far* more likely to launch a disastrous war overseas. Harper simply takes for granted that's the case and relentlessly criticizes Harris' rhetorical approach.

If you're a major outlet honest about the fact that Republicans are extremists who lied repeatedly and systemically to fool these communities about their actual policies, you might upset a Republican source, advertiser, reader, or owner, so it's best to leave that part out of your story

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today. This could be you.
Distraught woman says ICE killed her wife in video after deadly Minneapolis shooting
"They killed my wife," the distraught woman says, adding, "They shot her in the head."
An ICE agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman who was driving an SUV in Minneapolis on Wednesday. / Screenshot/@Breaking911"They killed my wife. I don't know what to do," the woman says through sobs in the footage, with a damaged SUV visible in the distance behind her. "We stopped to videotape, and they shot her in the head," the woman cries.
"We have a six-year-old at school," she says, almost unable to breathe, as a chaotic scene in which federal officers prevented at least one doctor who was on the scene from assisting the shot victim unfolds. "We're new here," the distraught woman says in despair.

imo it's simultaneously true that 1) kids have the deck stacked against them right now and it's good to be aware of and concerned about that and 2) it probably pays to look back on your own childhood and be realistic about how many of the moral panics thrown over your generation were total nonsense

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick. Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

This sort of admission—the VP is involved in prosecutorial decisions, the "concerns" arise from political actors, and the administration knows they don't have probable cause—would have prompted the Founders to impeach everyone involved.

One of the biggest blunders (when well-intentioned) and betrayals (when not) in Democratic rhetoric over the years is their impenetrable insistence that what voters respond to is somebody who begins by finding common ground with their opponent, no matter who that opponent is or what that ground is.

Also: so much of the discussion around kids in public revolves around noise. Let me tell you that nothing is noisier than a child who is being told “no” or constructively corrected. If we want parents to enforce rules and boundaries, we should expect some noise.

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.
