Good news everyone: AI is *not* going to kill us all! But don't take my word for it -- I talked to (real) experts, and dug deep into the logic of an "AI apocalypse" and found it wanting. That doesn't mean AI companies are off the hook, though. (gift link) www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-a...

To underscore why this is especially awful for those who may not know, the measles vaccine is usually given at 12 months. Newborns rely on community immunity to prevent exposure, which until recently we have had in the US. This quite literally could be anyone's newborn. None of this had to happen.

To anyone who does not live in Paris but visits the city at regular intervals (as I do), the transformation has been staggering: Paris has been reclaimed from cars. It can be done, and could be done in London too. It is all about political will and taking the risk of being unpopular - for a while.

Here’s a useful historical analogy when it comes to AI: The year is 1892. Five days ago Andrew Carnegie consolidated his holdings into US Steel. Today, his hired goons are firing actual bullets at his workers. He is the demonic head of what will become the most polluting industry in U.S. history.

A harsh truth: The attempts to differentiate between “good” and “bad” AI are mostly a sign of ignorance of the state of the art. People are using generative AI to make useful tools for themselves every day. It’s all mixed up together now.

Good example of the dynamic on here, which is not that the site has "pro-AI" and "anti-AI" factions, but that even acknowledging the existence of a massive field of ubiquitous new technologies is verboten except via hysterical, belligerent ignorance. It's a pure cultural norm untethered to reality.
