Bloody hell MacOS, I'm sure you think it's really important every 5 minutes to pop up a little notification that GoogleUpdater has installed something or other, but I'm afraid you're the only one who gives a fuck.

Decades ago, I needed to change a bulb in one of the lights on my first car. In the index of the manual I had no luck looking under 'b' for 'bulb', nor 'l' for 'light'. In the end, I was reduced to reading through the entire thing until I found it under 'h' for 'how to change the bulbs'.

Here's a handy guide. If the media are saying a politician is doing socialism, they're not doing socialism. If a politician is doing socialism, the media is telling you they're doing islamic terrorism, destroying western civilization, turning your kids gay and in league with china.

Ah I forgot how trains at this time of night are full of arseholes who can’t sit on a seat properly, have a quiet phone call only they can hear, use headphones, or generally just sit down and shut the fuck up. Anyway, noise cancelling headphones deserve a Nobel prize.

Controversial opinion on the West Coast nationalisation: it would be better to go from a competing to cooperative approach, and rather than fill up the local trains with Birmingham-London passengers on cheap fares, make it affordable for them to use the IC services so they're not crowding the locals

So this weekend, to try to counteract a week of terrible mental health, I thought I'd get some housework done. We're now at about 3.30pm on the Sunday and I've cleaned a toilet and reorganised a cupboard. That's it. Haven't even cleaned the sink next to the toilet.

Housework weekend isn't going amazingly - it's gone 1pm on the Sunday and so far all I've managed to do is sort out the cupboard in the utility room where I keep all my DIY stuff. It does mean I've put away DIY stuff that was lingering around the house though.

It's been happening forever, and will happen forever, that rich people fuck off to lower-tax areas and frame it as political defiance of some law they personally don't like. 'Seatbelts in cars make it impossible for me to deliver wealth.' 'Without smoking in pubs, how am I meant to...'

Here it is.
diet. Would it not be better if they spent more money on wholesome things like oranges and wholemeal bread or if they even, like the writer of the letter to the New Statesman, saved on fuel and ate their carrots raw?
Yes, it would, but the point is that no ordinary human being is ever going to do such a thing. The ordinary human being would sooner starve than live on brown bread and raw carrots. And the peculiar evil is this, that the less money you have, the less inclined you feel to spend it on wholesome food. A millionaire may enjoy breakfasting off orange juice and Ryvita biscuits; an unemployed man doesn't. Here the tendency of which I spoke at the end of the last chapter comes into play.
When you are unemployed, which is to say when you are underfed, harassed, bored and miserable, you don't want to cat dull wholesome food. You want something a little bit "tasty". There is always some cheaply pleasant thing to tempt you. Let's have three pennorth

Things I’ve learnt so far today: 1. 35 minutes is not long enough to make it from a train at Euston to my East End dentist’s surgery. 2. I can walk from the tube station to the dentist (3/4 of a mile, 17 minutes according to Google maps) in just over 7 minutes, but I really shouldn’t.

I don’t know who decided that if I’m listening to music on my phone and switch to some other app that thinks it wants audio, it should pause my music and take over, even if not actively playing anything. If I want to pause my music, I’ll be the one to do it, thank you.

My favorite is when people who have no experience of a thing think they can talk all day about a thing. If you don't have ADHD, then how do you "know" it's over-diagnosed? If you don't need SSRIs, then how do you "know" others don't need them? This is literally basic empathy.

One of the faultlines in society is between people who think we should prioritise making sure everyone who's eligible for something gets it, and people who think we should prioritise making sure that nobody who isn't eligible for something gets it
