Gas prices have risen dramatically this year. For the typical driver, that's $65 more spent on gas monthly. If you're a typical F-150 driver in states like Alabama, Kansas, Mississippi, or Missouri, you're spending >$350 a month on gas now. We've got to give people other options.

Rising Gas Prices Are Punishing Household Finances. Policymakers Should Invest in Transit to Reduce Household Costs.
Amid months of rising gas prices, a typical driver now spends $65 more on fuel each month today than they did a year ago.

Absolute HEATER of an endorsement making the clear case that Jane Kim would be an unmitigated disaster for California’s insurance ratepayers. www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/arti...

Endorsement: Ben Allen for California insurance commissioner
OPINION: In a race with no Republican, some California voters may see an opportunity to take a chance on a radical candidate for state insurance commissioner. That would be a terrible mistake.

Infill housing requires around a third less in up-front infrastructure costs, and generate more property taxes than comparable greenfield development. As cities wrestle with budget shortfalls, they should allow more of this type of development. www.vox.com/future-perfe...

Like a basic one to me that you see a lot online is when there is a new development in California someone says in the comments “Ugh more rentals? There are so few homeownership opportunities in the city! Why do devs only want to build rentals?” Not knowing that this is a policy choice we’ve made.

a bit of a poem by kazakh writer olzhas suleimenov for a moment of triumph over space and many evil, pointless woes
People!
Citizens of the universe!
Guests of the galaxies!
Rulers of the terrestrial sphere!
You do not want to vanish
without a trace!
Live then, live, live,
with all your might!
Live, my people!
Live, my good kind.
You have made the first leap— conquered implacable gravity.
Now defeat the woes of this world, that your children may remember you!
Rivers—nourish the fields!
Cities-rise up on riverbanks!
Let the Earth like a heart burst forth, gripped by its watery veins!
We will find— we must find!—
all the answers to that one question: the terrestrial path, the extension of the trail to the stars,
conquered this day.

So much of the opposition to “new” things in cities (eg bike lanes, townhomes) comes down to “X doesn’t work for me, so we shouldn’t build that.” Why that gut reaction? Pure selfishness? Or a wrong impression that we all need/want the same thing? Or what else?
