Measure HLA is stuck. The ballot measure LA voters passed 2½ years ago said the city must install planned bike lanes when repaving. But the city stopped repaving, and new bike lane projects have slowed to a trickle. Exactly one HLA-compliant project has been installed. What comes next?

Sorry, this is just false. Permits have been pulled to begin construction on these buildings. Only a handful have been built. Almost all will be finished years after the election.

HAWKs exist to get around "signal warrants," but in every single case a Red-Yellow-Green traffic light would be better for the crosswalk. HAWKs' resting state is "blank" aka invisible. RYG's would project green so that drivers keep scanning them, looking to see whether they turn yellow and then red

It's a city street, not a highway. Cities need to hire traffic engineers that know the difference and design city streets for safety and movement of people, not fast movement of cars.

Excellent essay. Key passage: “Like a person who keeps lending money to their deadbeat lover, the city is sacrificing its own needs (reducing traffic deaths) because it thinks the other party (drivers) can’t handle meeting those needs. The result is dysfunction - pedestrians keep getting killed”

LA protects drivers' feelings at pedestrians' expense, and it's killing us. A crosswalk in my hood makes people wait up to 60 seconds so cars don't get annoyed. Pedestrians give up and just cross. Why have a signal at all? A 🧵 about the city’s codependent relationship with drivers.

L.A. is repaving the wrong streets! (part 1) Recently the city stopped repaving all kinds of streets, and instead almost entirely focuses on streets without sidewalks - which are mostly in suburban, well-off, and hilly areas.

👀 👀 👀 Zero SB 79 buildings proposed in LA in the first month. As of Aug. 1st, no projects had been filed under the 3-4 story Low Rise program, which the city created to avoid fully implementing SB 79 for now. The rules were in flux until June, so hopefully things pick up soon as developers adjust.

Los Angeles often feels less like one city than a collection of dozens of cities sharing a freeway system. So, yes. I love it here. But part of loving a place means wanting it to be the best it can be. And I think we do need a lot more civic camaraderie. We're Angelinos and we need to embrace it.

This is a fantastic piece and as a native Angelino, I can absolutely appreciate it. I also agree strongly with the idea behind it. I do think LA needs more civic pride and I think the complacency at City Hall and the NIMBYs can be actually be partly attributed to the fact we *don't* have that.

The most hypocritical part of trying to ban duplexes in Altadena is that ADUs will still be allowed (two if AB 956 passes). The homeowner quoted in the article has an ADU and plans on RENTING IT OUT once his home is rebuilt. But don't call him a "predatory developer" - he's a sainted homeowner.

There are plenty more creative ways to speed up the E Line! What if Exposition Blvd. in front of USC was pedestrianized? What if Flower St. was only for buses and trains? What if we built a ton of curb extensions? And remember, freight trains in the 80's got higher priority than the E Line today!

This is great stuff! Lots to glean, but I particularly appreciate this: many unpreempted grade crossings not only slows light rail, but makes travel time far more unreliable. Riders have to plan around the worst average trip time, not the best.
All those red lights make the E Line unpredictable. It averages 47 minutes from the beach to downtown but can take up to 57. Check out the long tail stretching to the right in the graph below, which shows the actual time it took various trains to get from Santa Monica to DTLA. Riders have to plan for the worst to make sure they are on time, which means they need to set aside nearly an hour to go east during morning rush.

That huge delay at 5th St in Santa Monica is especially painful given you're RIGHT outside the station. Then when you finally get moving for that last 100 ft you fucking lurch into the station.

The E Line takes 47 minutes to go from DTLA to Santa Monica - often slower than driving. Ten years ago, it took 46. This is not an accident - it's a policy failure. A group of volunteers, including me, decided to do something about it. 🧵

Very helpful level-set on LA's much talked about ED 1 policy. It's not as effective as it could have been, but it's still having a major impact. With 8,500 units under construction, the policy is helping LA produce a lot more affordable housing than it could before.

this one is a pretty flagrant disregard of the law if the legislature had meant "planned transit is eligible when it completes environmental review," they would have written the law to say that instead of "completed an LPA"!

SCAG's draft map of where SB 79 applies is out, and it leaves out the stations on two train lines - Sepulveda Line and K Line northern extension. Lots of stops on the Westside and WeHo. SCAG contends those lines haven't finished CEQA so they don't count. SCAG is wrong.

This would reduce the ULA tax multifamily projects pay but would not exempt new construction, which is what many advocates have been fighting for.
