What role do supporting brain cells play in cognitive decline and dementia? 🧠 New research led by @mironlab.bsky.social finds cells that produce the protective coating around nerve fibres (oligodendrocytes) can become dysfunctional with age & may contribute to cognitive decline👉 lnkd.in/eWcnSfnf

3/Aged oligodendrocyte-specific NRF2 knockout mice show attenuated cognitive improvement over time and mirror the white matter pathology of severe cognitive decline in human aging. This highlights oligodendrocytes and the NRF2 pathway as therapeutic targets to preserve cognition in human aging.

2/We studied brain white matter from individuals in The Lothian Birth Cohort, where cognition was tested at 11yrs & again @70 until death. Surprisingly, worse cognitive trajectories associate with smaller myelinated axon size, thicker myelin, and more oligodendrocytes with downregulation of NRF2.

🧪1/Our new paper led by @georgina-craig.bsky.social is out in @naturemedicine.bsky.social - we identify that oligodendrocytes contribute to cognitive decline in aging, using a human brainbank with >70yrs of cognitive data + modeling oligodendrocyte changes. www.nature.com/articles/s41591-026-04608-y

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.
