I mean, when I teach World Civ 2, I personally spend entirely too much time with Meiji through Militarist Japan. Part of this is because I have an unfortunate tendency to stan the genro in spite of all the culture and political time bombs they unwittingly planted.

In spite of being of the correct generation to have grown up while "Peanuts" was still in active publication, it's always a little surreal to be reminded that the most popular comic strip in the English-speaking world for fifty solid years was about an eight-year-old with clinical depression.

The longest single stretches of the White House under the control of one party happened after periods of major realignment - at the expense of one party over another. 24 years between 1861 - 1885 (Buchanan --- Cleveland) 20 years between 1933-1953 (Hoover --- Eisenhower)

having thought about this a bit, I think that it is actually a waste of the potential of the LLM to use it to simply automate the production of genre literature

Unpopular opinion: LLMs are generally deradicalizing people whose beliefs are based on pure propaganda. I've been watching this happen slowly with some people I care about. ChatGPT is one of the reasons they finally accept that the NRA, OAN, and NewsMax are lying to them.

The film I have given up on Scorsese making but which I genuinely think would be the greatest American story, would it be The Wolf of Wall Street from the perspective of one of his victims. Famously, doctors are easy marks for biotech stock promoters, because...

This is the conclusion I should have written to "Lying For Money"; nobody should ever feel bad about falling for a fraud because the thing that makes fraud possible is also the thing that makes all of society possible. It's no reflection on anyone's intelligence that a strategy designed...

And also that the kind of folks who take to this kind of big splashy terrorism are generally not subtle thinkers, or thinkers at all. They want to make their mark, and kill a lot of people!

There are reasons other than net take-home pay that generations of American parents steered their kids toward college. I don't see how "go into construction!" is helpful unless paired with more robust worker protections and a true safety net, especially in right to work states.

Anyway, articles like this are not meant to be helpful or useful for anyone contemplating a decision between college or trade school. They are meant to make people who do not have to make that decision feel ... something. Enlightened? I'm not sure.

The fact that - with falling real wages, an unpopular war and a historically unpopular president - we’re still pretty unsure if the Senate will flip is a good indication of how badly the debate favors Republicans

e.g., a movie critic I like just complained about a movie in which Dick Cheney was given complexity. "he literally did not have a pulse. he was a void shaped by greed." and... no? what the hell? why is this depersonalization necessary to imagine? except it's rote, a litmus test. which is worse.

that's the cult, but it didn't come out of nothing. look at how we talk about, say, trauma, or the impossibility of understanding another person's experience if one doesn't share an identity with them. everyone is an alien, which allows us to give them the simplest motivations, like "evil".

yup. they think differences in intelligence mean a difference in being. they seriously believe consciousness is stratified by how fast you can solve a goddam Rubik's cube. there are the genetically (racially) dumb, the normies, the smart, the ascended autistics, and the superintelligences to come.

and there I think you can see the remnants of the Generation X attitude of not wanting to sell out. we associate it with the hipsters of that era, but it was organic, and it stayed, while the trendsetters moved on to, well, selling out. and it's all wound up with ideas of cultural authenticity.

you're not allowed to look down on these people, but they are allowed to look down on you. they're the Herrenvolk, you see, but they're also not keeping up. I don't think the gently raised yuppies of BlueSky get the positional anxiety. they want to rise back up and still be true to themselves.

there's something... neoclassical about building a doomsday cult from fragments of favorite writers, an apocalyptic cento in which to hide one's personal mental pathology. "I believe I will be dissolved by trillions of tiny robots who will uncaringly turn me into paperclips. I want them to care."

Yeah I grew up as the son of an immigrant in 1980’s Indiana and the single worst thing that soured my social trust was the racist hostility (some) white people adopted toward my mother for no other reason than she looked and sounded foreign. Others would give her the shirt off their back.

This is a man who would flip his shit if his own children actually had to do sex work, which is how they all actually feel. Same thing as how Elon will tell young men to go into the trades but wouldn't want his own kids to do it despite not even knowing them.

Again, this is a proposal that ended up going nowhere because it just meant that only rich people would have access to credit cards (or they'd have huge annual fees). Which would certainly be interesting, but it would mean crazy things for the US economy.
