There's been conversation today about how much the third party candidate in 1968 decided the outcome of that famous election - Bush vs. Gore. So let's talk about this. As everyone knows, the most decisive moment in the early 1960s was the assasination of President Lyndon Johnson. thread

recently re-read SS-GB with my son, was struck by how Deighton (perhaps mindful of British libel laws, or just out of good taste) does not actually name the Vichy British Prime Minister.

"In that episode, Matt loses his memory and his heart during a brief liaison with "Mike" Yardner (Michael Learned). In the film, Learned returns as Mike, who reveals to Marshal Dillon that he is the father of their daughter...and asks him for help in saving her from a band of Apaches." surprise!

One of the less inflammatory comparisons made re:the Israel of the 21st century with a 20th century government I've seen is a comparison between France in the 50s and 60s and the Israel of today. thread

William Wallace Mills (1836-1913) was almost the father of a new state. thread
Black and white image shows a portrait of William Wallace Mills. He wears an opened dark colored coat, a light-colored vest and a white shirt underneath. Mills directly looks into the camera with big dark eyes, and only a dark mustache neatly trimmed to decorate his face. His hair has some waves that barely cover the top of his ears and is combed and parted at the side with a receding hairline.

"Indeed, the Government has fallen into the hands of the Slave Power completely. So far as national politics are concerned, we are beaten — there's no hope. We shall have Cuba in a year or two, Mexico in five; and I should not wonder if efforts were made to revive the slave trade," 1/

I enjoy listening to One Radio - Christmas, the Manila-based Christmas radio station on Radio Garden, because of the wonderful mix of old-time American Christmas carols in English, the same in Tagalog, and also Filipino Christmas pop of various sorts.

I've previously had threads about Maryland Whig John P. Kennedy and how he might plausibly have become President in 1841 (had he been Harrison's VP) or 1865 (if he had been Lincoln's VP in 1865). Not only did Maryland Whigs count a Kennedy in their number, but also a Johnson - thread
