The presence of a large number of non-citizen permanent residents in the US causes real problems for our political system, and these problems manifest themselves in a huge variety of ways. We can't rely on thermostatic reaction to Stephen Miller to solve everything.

This is a really good and important distinction. The interesting question becomes, how much of the money that goes into music is intending to buy Meaning Music, and how much is intending to buy something else.

I think it's more that integrity is basically impossible to prove, so claiming it is meaningless and most voters are instinctively skeptical. There's no agreed-upon authority who can credibly say "Candidate A is less corrupt or more honest than Candidate B".

We really don't talk enough about the Chinese Exclusion Act as an immense tragedy (probably because doing so would raise uncomfortable questions about our current very restrictive immigration laws). city.mofad.org/chinatown/hi...
At the time, there were virtually no restrictions on Chinese immigration to the United States, and by the early 1880s Chinatown teemed with department stores, laundries, curio shops selling paper fans and jade rings, and small restaurants. Soon the thrum of Chinatown spilled out into adjacent streets like Bayard, Elizabeth, and Mulberry. But this expansion came to an abrupt halt after 1882, with the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act by Congress, which slowed immigration to a trickle. In the year of the act, 40,000 people of Chinese origin arrived in the United States; in 1887, the country allowed entry to only 10.

617 days into his 2nd term, Trump's Department of Transportation has *still* not approved a single new transit project for full funding. The problems I highlighted in March—how this lack of funding only makes projects cost more & delays completion—have only worsened www.urban.org/urban-wire/r...
There have been no approvals for new transit projects in the entire 2nd Trump Administration. This graph, produced in March 2026, remains accurate now, in September 2026.

Left-NIMBYs love to pit welfare state expansion against land use reform, but the latter can 1) can achieve significant poverty reductions 2) without means testing or administrative burdens, and 3) at a net gain for the public budget, which can then be used to expand the welfare state.

New Congress has a humanist rep and a religiously unaffiliated senator – but why is it so hard for outright atheists to get voted in?
Despite a growing number of non-religious Americans, self-declared atheists are few and far between in the halls of power – putting the US at odds with other global democracies.

Usually, discussions about whether AIs can think or ever will be able to think are not my cup of tea. Too many terms whose definitions we can't agree upon, to name one thing. But I really enjoyed this essay by Katie Surrence. www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2026/09/beli... Here's how it starts.
[Title] Believing in thinking machines, and the severe risk therefrom, does not require believing in magic.
By Katie Surrence / On September 24, 2026 / At 8:21 am / In General
Round my neck of the woods, we are usually quite committed to materialist explanations for all of human cognition, up to and including consciousness. I share the commitment. This is quite the opposite of believing in magic. If you believe that cognitive phenomena are fully explicable, in principle, from material causes, then you have to at least be open to empirical demonstration that they could occur in another substrate, like, say, a computer. Ten years ago, I would have said, “In practice human brains can encode so much more complexity than a computer. It would require extraordinary technological advances in hardware to approach any of the interesting aspects of human cognition. Maybe someday, but this is nothing that I will see in my lifetime.” I have updated my beliefs in response to events.

Let’s consider “reasoning”. You could make a list of progressively stronger requirements for reasoning that looks like this:

1) goal-directed transformation of representations according to rules

2) goal-directed transformation of representations that have meaning, and correspond to things in the world

3) the preceding, plus drawing conclusions about representations because they are supported by evidence, distinguishing good and bad inferences

4) all of the preceding, plus conscious consideration of reasons

The base getting mad at quisling legislators for not ending the filibuster. Republicans: they're just like us! www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/u...
The donor, Timothy Mellon, a reclusive Wyoming billionaire who is a grandson of the Gilded Age industrialist Andrew Mellon, gave nearly $200 million to support President Trump and other Republicans in the 2024 election. Only Elon Musk donated more.

Two years later, Mr. Mellon has given just $3 million or so in publicly disclosed donations to Republican candidates or groups. He also made a $20 million donation last month to help House Republicans, according to two people briefed on the contribution, which will not be disclosed until the next financial reports.

But Mr. Mellon has given nothing publicly so far to support Senate Republicans this fall — a move that has been conspicuous in the party’s financial circles, and shows how some influential Republicans remain angry about the party’s inability this summer to pass the voting legislation, called the SAVE America Act
