In a story on political violence (where they depict the targets as equally democratic and republican), the @nytimes.com gives a sympathetic ear to a member of Congress who was part of January 6.
Representative Derrick Van Orden, a Republican from Wisconsin seeking re-election next month, attended the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6, 2021, in support of President Trump’s false claim that he had won the 2020 election. Mr. Van Orden was outside the U.S. Capitol that day when a mob attacked it, though he has denied entering the building. He was elected to Congress in 2022That’s when the threats began.

“I was a Navy SEAL for over 22 years,” Mr. Van Orden said in an interview with The Times. “I hunted terrorists around the world a lot and was very successful at that. Never had a single threat to my family. Ever.”

The problem is that frequently the sincere conviction is "Me personally being in a position of power is the most important thing in the world" (and "position of power" can refer to Kansas State Auditor)

dc statehood is non-negotiable after trump's actions in his second term. republicans despise the people of the city that hosts them, and there is little reason to think that, now that the seal is broken on treating them as an occupied population, a next republican president will be more restrained

This kind of rhetorical maximalism is so dumb. You could argue, sure, that the death penalty is on a blurry spectrum and deserves to be lumped in with lynchings. But that's not so obvious that denying it constitutes dishonesty.

Colonialism and capitalism are pretty clearly wrong, but what's the case against "eating animals is violence"? I think a lot of people feel defensive about eating meat because they know it kind of sucks morally, but don't want to feel bad about it. Me, I just accept feeling guilty.

The exact same dynamic played out in real life 20 years later, during Trump's 2016 campaign. "If you want to appeal to Republicans, do the most over-the-top, gratuitously stupid version of their beliefs, they'll love it" turns out to be great political advice. www.npr.org/2016/03/30/4...

Trump Backtracks On Comments About Abortion And 'Punishment' For Women
In an interview set to air on MSNBC Wednesday night, Donald Trump upset both abortion rights advocates and opponents and drew criticism from the rest of the presidential field.

Dan Mauler 🎃 @meelar.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The conversation turns to politics. The senator says something about how abortions should be banned, and Lane doubles down, saying "she" thinks the women should be executed. The senator is shocked, but quickly finds this charming and appealing.

I saw "The Birdcage" a month or two ago, and there's a particular scene I can't stop thinking about. Albert (Nathan Lane) is an extremely flamboyant drag queen who for plot reasons has to convince a Republican Senator that he (Lane) is actually a very conventional housewife.

It's tough! I think the better approach is just to acknowledge that limits to religious freedom exist. Germany has free speech, but they also ban swastikas; so a place could have freedom of religion, but still ban hardcore anti-gay beliefs (the Mormons will recognize this game, from the losing end).

I don't think this is a very good argument, even though it reaches the correct conclusion that this guy shouldn't be hired. By analogy: there are many Christians who believe that the Sabbath falls on Sunday. Does that mean that 7th-Day Adventists don't have a religious belief that it's Saturday?

Yeah, I'm not trying to criticize any particular structure; my beef is with treating two-parent, one-income families as *aspirational*. We all know how that will cash out in terms of which gender participates in the workforce and which one stays home. It's a thinly-veiled attempt to defeminize jobs.

Dan Mauler 🎃 @meelar.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The whole "one-income families" thing is a subtle way that ultra-right views have quietly become a normal thing. I hate it.

Yeah, but the decline in fertility has been a lot steeper and faster than the rise in incomes. Their fertility rate is the same or lower than places like the US or northern Europe; their incomes are not.
110
Dan Mauler 🎃 @meelar.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
This seems like it has some tension with fertility declines that are occurring in lower and middle-income countries. It's not just a first-world problem anymore, TFR is below 1.5 in places like Chile, Thailand, Uruguay and Cape Verde

It enables whole new types of surveys if you do use it correctly, but it doesn't obviate the need to actually do the survey.

Dan Mauler 🎃 @meelar.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Yes, this is right. A really good way to use LLMs in survey research is to include more open-ended questions. Coding open-ends is a tremendous pain in the ass for the people doing the data processing, and LLMs are great at doing it quickly.

Dan Mauler 🎃 @meelar.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I'm actually not sure that's true, as long as the point of the exercise is "work through the logical flaws and contradictions in this survey instrument", rather than trying to actually estimate public opinion. I used to work in polling and a surprising number of clients and pollsters are bad at it.

Shipping costs used to be a huge component of the cost of goods. Paying surly dockers to spend a week unloading and loading a cargo hold by hand was expensive. It often was not worth it to import goods even if they could be made cheaper elsewhere, because of freight costs.
