Academics with comfortable jobs, tenured, a billionaire, the people who hunted Arday across Twitter made my skin crawl. The gleeful, violent, vicious joy they displayed. The "jokes" The dismissal of the suggestion that there could be consequences.

Flash: New footage of Arday finishing a marathon after having a seizure and fracturing his leg…mon Baron-Cohen
@sbaroncohen
In 2014 we published the first large-scale study of suicidality in autism, subsequently widely replicated, revealing that 1 in 4 autistic people have planned or attempted suicide. That’s why I’m very concerned about the impact of the media coverage on Professor Jason Arday who is autistic. He has been accused of plagiarism and he was cleared of any academic misconduct following a rigorous investigation by Liverpool John Moores University. And yet he continues to be systematically discredited over every detail of his life, daily. We should of course always investigate plagiarism to protect academic standards. However, I cannot stand by and watch when an autistic man is on the ground and the kicking continues. This is relentless bullying of a vulnerable autistic man and raises safe-guarding issues. It’s time to stop.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Despite university clearance, Arday's PhD thesis contains dozens of near-verbatim unattributed passages from prior works, and a journal corrected his paper for missing citations to adapted text including participant quotes. retractionwatch.com/2026/07/27/cam… mdpi.com/2076-0760/12/1…

OK folks, Arday is gone now. But we—academics and everyone else who still cares about truth and public trust—cannot let it go yet.

It seems like Cambridge, alongside other mainstream institutions like the BBC that promoted Arday over the years despite all the evidence of fraud, intends to just call Arday an unfortunate bad apple, somewhat unfairly maligned by a "racially motivated" mob, and move on.

But Cambridge can only restore trust by openly investigating how this happened and holding those who promoted Arday responsible. Otherwise, we are all but proving the populists right about woke elites and out-of-touch academics.

And for all the comparisons, this is far worse than all other high-profile cases of plagiarism and misconduct at Harvard and beyond—we're talking about a journalist being investigated by police for months simply for asking questions, while Cambridge refused to investigate the fraud itself until a massive public outcry.

Had Arday exaggerated less and made up his quotes instead of plagiarizing, nobody would have noticed—this type of research is not falsifiable.

But what does this all say about academic standards in Cambridge, sociology, and education?

It is no wonder academics are losing trust. x.com/21percentgroup…

Horrific. So many gleeful ghouls, ranging from far right to liberal, who jumped on this issue to vent their spleen over everything they think they’re entitled to if only they didn’t have to share with people they, deep down or shallowly, deem unworthy. A murder by social media witch hunt.

its worth asking whether this ending would have happened without the endless, gleeful, hunting and dismantling of Arday's choices on Twitter, where he represented all the sins of DEI made flesh for a range of assorted disgruntled academics who once had to go to a training and hated it
