“He visited Dresden’s Zwinger Gallery nine times and during a day spent in the Alte Akademie was entranced by Caspar David Friedrich’s nocturnal landscape, Two Men Observing the Moon. Thus was planted the idea for a play that, years later, would make his name: Waiting for Godot.”

It's an old classic from the corporate playbook – turn creativity into mass market baby food and deflect any criticism as snobbery/elitism. "Let us enjoy ourselves you old stick in the mud." So far it has killed movies and pop music. The culture of the consumer.

What I really don’t like is the implication that mass market fiction which gets placed in every bookshop is a smol bean that needs to be protected from mean literary bluenose types who intentionally read books they hate. That’s not the dilemma publishing is in right now.

God bless my dad for somehow persuading my mother to let him wake me up at 11 p.m. on Monday school nights for four or five weeks in a row to watch the Marx Brothers on our little black-and-white Bush TV when I was eight years old. The best education of its kind.

A gut-punch of a statistic, reflective of what's happening throughout the entire natural world. But using the word "stocks" to describe a wild population of one of Earth's most breathtaking, magical species indicates precisely why we've reached such a predicament. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2026...
