My Labor Day vacation rolled into a few especially busy weeks at work, which then rolled into the AAS-in-Asia conference in Pakistan, and then somehow September was over. I’m writing this during a Saturday afternoon layover in the Istanbul airport, where a strong latte and chewy almond cookie are keeping me vertical.

I spent the past weekend working at #AASinAsia2026 in a building at Lahore University of Management Sciences that was constructed, in part, thanks to a $10 million donation from USAID back in 1994. Trump's decimation of that agency, and many others, has completely squandered American soft power.

FWIW, this is at most a departmental decision and more likely a (poor) decision by an individual prof. Not only has no one asked me to use wechat to take attendance for my courses, no one has asked me to use wechat at all, nor have I been asked to take attendance. (I do neither).
