“Odgers, who also provided an endorsement for Restoring Childhood, told me that she appreciates the fact that the book is
"broadening the conversation" about children's mental health to include "a major stressor as reported by young people, that we actually see in the data." But she expressed frustration at the logic used by Gray and Haidt alike. She noted their shared willingness to apply one explanation (video games, unleaded gas) to the mental-health improvements of the 1990s and 2000s, and then a completely different one (Common Core, social media) to a later section of the same trend line….”

“Since 2020, firearms have been the leading cause of death among children & teens. While a majority of those deaths are due to homicides, a significant % are suicides”🛟🧪 Safe & secure gun storage—unloaded & locked up—saves lives. Spread the word: Firearm violence prevention is everyone's job.
“An estimated 32 million children in the United States live in homes with firearms, nearly 7 million of whom have at least one firearm in the household that's unlocked and loaded. That's according to a new study published in JAMA Network Open.

"This study sheds further light on the fact that there are millions of kids living in this country, in households where weapons are readily available and often not locked up," says Dr. Chethan Sathya, a pediatric surgeon and director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention at North yell Health, a health system in New York. "Many of these families don't know the risk of having that gun not being locked up."

“Death by suicide is a male emergency. Although 3x as many women as men report suicidal ideation & attempts, the vast maj of deaths by suicide in the US—up to 80%—are among men… [A recent analysis of 988 data] sheds light on [part of the] explanation: Men reach out for help a lot less than women”🛟🧪
“The takeaway, Shattuck said, is developmental. Boys need to be equipped with better emotional literacy earlier in life so that they can carry the capacity of building and nurturing relationships as they grow older. The report helps identity the coping mechanisms they already turn to, including social connection, exercise or sports, creative outlets, mental health services, and time in nature," Shattuck said.
"That is important because it frames prevention around strengthening existing protective factors, not only expanding clinical care."..”
