Addictive personality as a concept is relatively useless now not least bc today ‘addiction’ has come to signify too many things from SUDs to behavioral problems & also subclinical intensive engagement

Back of the envelope calculations: 3600 years of research time went into the collective application process. The research will fund 3200 years of research. We are 400 research years poorer as a result of this. 1/2

Let's talk about the bristlemouths, 13 species of bioluminescent deep-dwelling ocean fish in genus Cyclothone. There are a lot of them. Like, a lot. Specifically, our best guess is there are a million billion (1E15) bristlemouths on Earth. Making them the most populous vertebrate on the planet.
A xenomorph looking fish with dark slightly sparkly skin and an oversized lower jaw packed with sharp, needle-like teeth.

When anyone is hiring & getting 100-300 full applications they're totally failing the recruitment job-- one should either know what they want (= requirements that few meet) or cast a broader net but ask only 1 short doc for screening

Excellent summary & reminds me of what @togelius.bsky.social wrote some time ago (link in reply)
In many ways, I feel that the worries are not completely aligned with reality. Partly, that’s because I don’t think there is actually a consensus within the mathematics community about what our value to society actually is, or why we value the specific things we do. Is our goal to foster human understanding of mathematics or to discover new mathematical truths? Do we do mathematics because it’s beautiful and (for a twisted mind like my own) enjoyable, or because it’s useful? Is our value to society based on the actual theorems and techniques we produce, or on the fact that we are training the next generation to think critically, logically, and analytically? It’s all of the above, of course, but the problem – as I see it – is that for a long time we’ve used some of these things as proxies for others without thinking clearly through the distinctions. In the past, developing powerful new mathematical theories has been inextricably linked to the ability to “think like a mathematician” and train the next generation of students. Proving important new theorems, or applying sophisticated mathematical techniques to important problems, has been viewed as something that only a well-trained human mathematician could do. But now autonomous AI systems are capable of doing many of the same things – and in many cases both faster and better. This means that some of the skills we’ve previously treated as synonymous will have to be decoupled

Tässä sama ongelma kuin ERCn aiemmin ilmoittamassa muutoksessa, joka peruutettiin kun huomattiin ongelma: karenssi tulee pisteistä 1-4, jonka asettaa ilmeisesti edelleen paneeli (eli edustaja joka lukee hakemuksen)-- rangaistukset eivät tule ammattiarvion perusteella vaan panelistin mutu-tuntumalla

I sympathise with review pressures but cannot believe this is anywhere near an optimal solution: the ERC panel review is the weakest part of the process, based on short summaries & non-topic experts-- punishments will be given unfairly, not even based on the actual B2 applications

This is my anecdotal exp of the world too, been thinking about the reasons often-- a) it takes time to find the thing you both love & have the talent for so starting a bit behind is logical, b) talent ≠ long-term performance, those with talent alone shine bright before slowly falling behind

journal prestige can and should be earned
