Just watched the Rossellini Flowers of St Francis in honour of the day. If you haven’t seen it, do.

I was away for two days on a research trip. As you might imagine much of my morning today has been taken up with deleting emails.

I'm working theologically on hope as a current side project. I think hope is urgently needed in our apparently hopeless world. It is precisely for this reason that I stand utterly opposed to the hopewashing that we are seeing from Britain's governing party.

There's an annoying tendency in contemporary Catholic thought to claim that contemporary society is 'relativist'. Things are vastly more complicated than that. And there are plenty of people who could do with recognising that some of their truth-claims are relative.

Day 2 of the UCU workers' strike at the University of Edinburgh. The 1,800 jobs UCU estimates will be cut is unprecedented in Scottish higher education. It is happening in the wealthiest Scottish university, and the third richest in the UK, currently sitting with over £3billion reserves.

I continue to find this bizarre as well as deeply dubious given that Suella Braverman is not a Christian. (That’s not a No True Scotsman, she’s a Buddhist).

Our members at Edinburgh University are on strike over outrageous cuts. Here at Labour Party Conference we heard from students who stood in solidarity with our members in a huge rally this week. Inspiring.

I commented on this “partnership” already, and this is not good news. Keep commercially acting AI firms out of our cultural heritage.

My controlling Marxist take on HE is that we are commodity producers, helping to produce the complex labour-power of our students. We should therefore in our teaching help students see, through the beauty of their subjects, that they are worth a lot more than this.

On the other, more substantive, hand: if what these folks mean by contrasting the academy with "the real world" is that the academy has a different ethos than, say, many for-profit employment settings, then ... YES!

As I've mentioned, I'm writing an article on the reception of Wittgenstein by 20th century British Catholics. I'm going to say something about the Slant authors: their engagement with Marx is rightly widely recognised, but there's an awful lot of Wittgenstein in the mix as well.

Catholic moral theology marks a distinction between killing and letting die. This is sometimes misinterpreted as meaning that letting die is very often OK. In fact it relatively rarely is. And letting refugees drown at sea is not one of the exceptions.

A lot of reporting on drinks spiking today because it‘s freshers‘ week across most universities. Sadly, the reporting is dodging the key social issue: that it‘s overwhelmingly men spiking drinks. The root problem is male violence & male entitlement, & the social forces that promotes those things.

Didn’t Catholics get the memo that Matthew the apostle and ‘Matthew’ the evangelist are pretty much certainly distinct people? The continued elision is weird and doesn’t speak well of the reception of biblical scholarship.
