Disability taxes continue to mount. From Nov 2nd, Melbourne Pathology will charge $30 for a home pathology visit for housebound & bedbound people. This was previously a free service, servicing some of the states most vulnerable chronically ill and disabled people. These costs add up 😔 #AusPol

“ME/CFS patients are deeply inconvenient.” George Monbiot on how people with #MECFS need long term support, but governments and insurers have an incentive to “brush it away” and dismiss patients leaving them “massively mistreated, maligned” and “blamed for their illness”.

House prices falling by a percentage not seen in 40 years does not mean house prices have fallen to affordable levels - it is just that we have seen them increase so much year on year, that falls seem significant BUT IT DOESN'T MAKE HOUSING AFFORDABLE IT JUST MEANS THE HOUSING MARKET HAS BEEN BROKEN

It’s not a story that anyone wants to hear but in February 2018 I caught a friend’s sore throat. While he recovered fully, I just kept declining, and by June I was 99% bedbound. Eight years later, that’s where I remain. We desperately need better defenses against all respiratory viruses.

It’s also severely penalised them re gaining new fans in Melbourne. This experiment has proven the city will fully embrace a team who spend a week here, with various interactions with the city. And shun a team who turns up the day before. 😅 The stadium nearly full of red is absolute proof.

Having flown between Aus and the US, I’m zero percent surprised the NFL team who arrived yesterday is doing badly 🙃 Granted I haven’t tried it in first class. However first class doesn’t negate 16hrs in the air & time zone change. No matter how hard you try to pretend your time zone didn’t change.

An occupational therapist’s guidance for caring well for people with severe ME/CFS
For someone with severe myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), being sick is a full-time job. Light, sound, conversation, movement, sitting upright, eating, even being asked a question, all of it can cost more energy than the body has to spend. For these patients, healthcare itself can become one more source of exertion.

That was the starting point for Amy Mooney, MS, OTR/L, when she joined Bateman Horne Center’s “Coffee” with a Clinician for Severe ME/CFS Awareness Month. Amy is an occupational therapist and a caregiver herself, and she came with a message she wanted every provider, and every caregiver, to sit with: care should be built around what a person’s body can actually tolerate, not around what we’ve been trained to expect a patient to tolerate.

Here’s what she shared.

BHC: What do you wish every healthcare provider understood about caring for someone with severe ME/CFS?

I wish this was true. 25% of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis patients are bedbound. Often for years and decades. Most can’t access healthcare, let alone are offered or can access treatments. Which don’t cure, but can relieve some symptoms. But most are medically neglected.

Roman clay hot water bottles in the shape of human body parts used for therapeutic purposes some 2,000 years ago! Found in a building which may have been a healing centre. Paphos Archaeological Museum, Cyprus 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a museum display at Paphos Archaeological Museum of ancient Roman red clay vessels shaped like human body parts each of which has a spout with a handle either side, allowing it to be filled with hot water or oil. The clay walls of the vessels are only 3 mm thick so that heat would be conducted to the body. They are comparable in size to the corresponding human parts of the body including ears, torso, groin, hands, thigh, knee, shin, and feet. They are mounted for the display over a simple outline of a human figure, illustrating their possible therapeutic use around 2,000 years ago.

Given SES & police would work together all the time on searches like this, wouldn’t communications protocols & procedures be even more important when dealing with inter-agencies? And be known as a basic fact by people high up the command?

When a large proportion of the day to day work of police is essentially communications, requiring much training, procedures & experience… this take from a police assistant commissioner is astounding. If he believes this scenario doesn’t have a comms procedure then there are serious problems.
