Wednesday 23rd February 2022. Alan, along with a galaxy of stars, attend Baz’s funeral.
23 February. Barry Cryer's funeral. Breakspear Crematorium at Ruislip in the parish of Harefield (with its tombs) - now the heart of suburbia. Michael Palin one of the throng outside, both he and
R. standing while someone makes room for me. Service conducted by a funeral handler, and not badly, though I'm reminded of Simon Gray after Alan Bates's Derbyshire funeral, 'I want the old Prayer Book and not a word more.' That apart it was good, not particularly trying for laughs (Palin predictably funniest), his family good and best of all his widow, looking (at ninety something?) very glamorous still (her sister there, a hundred, on a stick but otherwise h&h) and wholly composed. Thereafter at a local hotel where I'm installed on a sofa and people come up, particularly comedians - Rob Brydon, Arthur Smith, Paul Merton, Tony Hawks, Bob Cryer, and David Sherlock, Graham Chapman's relict, once a thin lad with odd ears who I remember from the seventies now a substantial middle-aged figure. None of the Oldie crowd that I could see, though Harry Mount is there. An unrecognisable old man on sticks who R. tells me is Bernard Cribbins.
The last joke Barry told me, only a week or two before his death, concerned a couple walking down the street when they spot someone across the road. The wife looks twice. 'Isn't that the Archbishop of Canterbury?" The husband isn't sure or even much interested but the wife prevails on him to go over and ask him if she's right.
"Forgive me asking but aren't you the Archbishop of Canterbury?' Man: Fuck off.
The husband returns to his wife, who asks what the man had
replied
Husband: He said, 'Fuck off!'
'Oh', said his wife. 'Now we shall never know?
The regular scenario for many of Barry's jokes concerned St Peter at the gates of heaven, so that when he finally arrived there last month it can have been no surprise.

1/23 Sorry, this will be long... There is a lot of shouting about what happened in the Channel yesterday. So I want to go back to basic law. Not immigration policies or political rhetoric. At sea, the starting point is simple: Preservation of life comes first under all maritime conventions.

Really good to see this result on an important debate about RESTORING rights that have been stripped away. Opponents seem to have relied on distractions and misleading information, presumably because their argument is so weak

The RNLI rescued Luftwaffe pilots in WW2 because the organisation is there to 'save life at sea' - it's something to be immensely proud of. But as I've said many times before Farage and Co don't seem to have pride in Britain and its institutions beyond flags and crap Enoch Powell said 60 years ago.

Just been reminded of this. Newer friends and followers may not know of that type 11 years ago when I was writing for the Guardian and finally snapped at their ludicrous image archive setup and it got published on the actual site. #cake #breakdown
A cake
I Do you know how long l've spent in the Guardian's image archives to find a picture of a bog
standard cake? Bloody ages! Thousands of images and not one thing that you'd recognise as a
normal cake. This weird ice cream thing is the best I could do. Everything else has a sodding fried
egg or a bunch of parsley obscuring it, or has been arranged to resemble a Picasso painting or a
sculpture reflecting the futility of existence. When did this place becore riddled with hipsters?

Dolly Parton on trans rights. God I loved her.
When looking at the issue of anti-trans legislation, Parton said that “I try to get into the human element of it.” Pointing out that she has people in her life who identify as queer and trans, the 77-year-old star said it was important to hear what they’re saying.

“I know and love them all, and I do not judge. And I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are,” she said. “I know how important this is to them. That’s who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me. If there’s something to be judged, that is God’s business. But we are all God’s children and how we are is who we are.”
