My new novel is out a week from today — tough timing because of the election & uh, you know, the world. With book reviews an extinct species, it's hard to get the word out. So tell your friends! Meanwhile, I've started the next one, folkish horror set in a bog at a remote Maine hunting camp. Onward!

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

I've got a good idea for how the BBC should pick the live action show's next showrunner. Ask them how this show fits into canon. If they give any answer other than 'what on earth are you talking about?' 'who cares?' or 'grow up', they are immediately disqualified:

Think it was Richard Wyn Jones who observed that you don't get much more 'somewhere' than Remain voting Cymrophones living on Ynys Môn. The whole thing was projecting a very metropolitan idea of what people believe onto places where for various reasons that might not be true.

J.G. Ballard, lost in the supermarket
"It was ironic that the author of such unsettling work was a quiet and serious family man, who lived most of his adult life in a modest suburban house in Shepperton. His editor Malcom Edwards recalled how Ballard, on receiving the first payment for the film rights for Empire of the Sun, decided to splash out by visiting his local supermarket. After wandering the aisles for some time, he returned home with a tin of salmon." (Adam Sisman in the Guardian, 25.04.26)

developing a safe and reliable driving automation system is such a vast and complex task, which can be undercut by even a little sloppiness, that it's impossible to develop them in a rigorously safe way if you also buy into a utilitarian permission structure that justifies cutting corners short term

In the kindest way possible “it’s the phones” works the least in India, where the Supreme Court gave Modi a pass on culpability for the 2002 sectarian unrest in Gujarat. Resurgent right-wing nationalism in India is definitely not the fault of social media.

Finally, it's a matter of research integrity that one designs and performs the best study possible at any given point in the scientific process, given the resources, where best = one that has the highest probability of producing net epistemic gains. 50 years later, the original design ain't that.

Replication cannot be an epistemic shortcut to bypass the scientific process of incrementally eliminating error. At this point I find this kind of lack of understanding and lack of respect for the scientific process infuriating. There are no shortcuts.

Statistical power has been lionized in metascience. First, you care about statistical power only bec your whole scientific vision relies on the results of a hypothesis test. Get over it. Second, power can never make up for poor design, lack of theoretical understanding, or biased samples/measures.

"We still don't know how large or reliable the effect is" suggests you need more exploration bec you have not stabilized the effect yet. That is not something a replication (esp. non-exact), however large, can answer for you. You need to do more groundwork to figure out what phenomenon you study.

That this was seminal work and very well cited is not good enough reason to design a mega-study that cannot give you the answer you need (whether the effect is true or not/whether the original study was good or not). There already are published replications. And many ways to evaluate research.

I don't understand this. 52 years later, why try and replicate the original? It's obviously not going to be the same study. The world has changed; cars, traffic, and people have changed. If one is interested in false memory, why not design the best study you can? What can you conclude meaningfully?

Political parties should know this!

Humans are such a frustrating species. They are considering a cull of greenland sharks due to pressures on the fishing industry. But as usual, nature isn't the problem, people are. It's just much easier to kill wild animals than to address the tougher issues. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
A screenshot of the article:

“If every Greenland shark in Baffin Bay vanished tomorrow, the inshore fishery in Avannaata would still face too many boats working a quota under pressure, rising costs and no alternative employment,” he says. “When margins are narrow, a longstanding nuisance becomes intolerable.”A screenshot of the article:

For some of those fishing these waters, however, the shark is not the leading cause of losing gear. “There are more and more ‘ghost lines’ and they are too heavy to pull up by the machine we use,” Jensen says. Ghost lines are discarded or lost gear that can get entangled with new lines, breaking equipment and trapping marine life.

For those whose families lived through the Jewish traumas of Mitteleuropa, it isn't that esoteric why Zionism was once seen this way, even as it has now become Kahanism. The lesson here is not unique to Zionism, but the opposite - how easily liberation movements become the thing they once hated.

It would be better for everyone if resolutions saying “Zionism is racism” also said, for example, “Hindutva is racism” and “Sinhala Buddhist nationalism is racism.” It might make Jews feel less singled out, but it would also force pro-Israel people to defend their ideology on its own terms.
