RIP Cheetah Chrome. I saw the Dead Boys in 1970s DC & they were great. Always dug this Stones cover, from their second, more polished album, though nothing beats their first and ”Sonic Reducer” (original version was back when he was with Rocket from the Tombs). None of those guys made old bones …

A family member once observed, not unkindly and also accurately, that in childhood photos, I look like a little girl in a Roz Chast cartoon. This still often holds as an adult.

I love Star Trek. There, I said it. Grew up watching it from the first episode and still catch it on planes and in hotel rooms, where it always seems to be on, in some version. And I'd love to see Shatner take on Thiel. Amok time!

Broken up to learn that Cassandra Wilson has died — such an incredible artist, always pushing the limits of what her voice could do. I was just listening to her a few nights ago. Too many losses.

John Crowley has died, a much-loved friend & perhaps the most brilliant writer of our time. I recall the sense of immanence I felt upon reading Aegypt nearly 40 years ago, doors opening endlessly in front of me. We are blessed to have lived in his world & to have his work now that's he's left it.

Another deep sigh. I remember three decades ago being on or watching con panels, with topics like "Can Women Write Science Fiction/Fantasy/etc." Depressing to think the needle hasn't moved, though renaming genres is always a popular pastime, in fiction as in breakfast cereal.

I'm heartsick at the news that The Washington Post has laid off 30% of its staff, including everyone at Book World. I've freelanced for BW since 1988 & its editors, writers, & fellow reviewers felt like a family of sorts. Writing is an isolating business: everyone at Book World made it less so.
