This autumn is the 10th anniversary of the publication of Written/Unwritten: Diversity and the Hidden Truths of Tenure. It came out during a heartbreaking time, my mom’s passing. I worked on copy edits and proofs from her living room, between medical appointments. uncpress.org/978146962771...

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a popular/trade biography of Hildegard? I really want something cozy to curl up with, but that won't break my brain with inaccuracies (as a feminist musicologist). Trying to ground myself in the good things too, and Hildegard is always a good thing.

And so it begins: breathing space? 1 Henry IV #ProdigalPrince #SlowShakespeare www.english.cam.ac.uk/research/slo... Here's Richard Coyle as King Henry IV in Player Kings, the 2024 composite version of 1+2 Henry by Rob Icke.
A photograph of a play in performance. A king stands with a big crown, a red velvet and ermine robe, and an orb and sceptre in his hands; he's just been crowned. There are four people in very formal black suits standing around him, bowing; one of them has a purple cushion, which the crown has just been carried on. Other people are watching from the back of the stage, dimly lit. The mood is solemn.

Tiny Gulliver rows a toy boat in a large wooden cistern while an oversized king, a queen and fanned ladies, and stern pikemen watch from a raised platform, a satirical scene emphasizing the comic size contrast and royal bemusement.

#ProdigalPrince my new #SlowShakespeare blog, reading 1 Henry IV every day, around 10 lines at a time, starts TOMORROW, 1 October! Here's one of my favourite Hals (and actors): Geoffrey Streatfeild @the-rsc.bsky.social 2007-8, with David Warner as Falstaff.
A photograph of a play in performance. An older man with luxuriant white hair and beard is looking past the camera, holding up both his hands. He's wearing a crumpled white shirt and a reddish-brown leather jerkin, undone and unkempt, over an ample belly, with a jaunty red scarf. Sitting behind him, feet up on a bed, is a younger man with slicked down blond hair, wearing cream trousers tucked into black boots, a messy white shirt and cream jerkin. And quite a lot of eyeliner.

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

I'm going to tell you a story and then, at the end, I'm going to ask you if anyone happens to have the niche knowledge I need to help... The story begins, as so many of my stories do, in an ancient church in the middle of a city. But it's not now. And it's not hundreds of years ago. It's the 1960's

I just gave a lecture on the French and Haitian Revolutions and got to use this amazing 1948 painting by the Haitian artist Dieudonné Cedor depicting the 1791 Vodou gathering in the forest of Bois Caïman, the pivotal ceremony that ignited the revolution.
A priest dressed in bright scarlet robes stands at the center with arms outstretched upward, directing the ritual invocation.

Loved seeing this c.1654 painting by Jacobus Vrel known as “The Little Nurse”; Vrel has often been confused with Vermeer, and I thought of John Berger’s words when I saw this very human scene: “What was it that he wanted to say in the stillness of his rooms which the light fills like water a tank?”
A painting of a woman sitting in a wooden chair near a fireplace in a sunlit, sparsely furnished room with plates displayed on a high shelf.

Little poll, replies appreciated from UK academics who have teaching responsibilities. If you were to go on an academic writing retreat in winter/spring, when would be convenient? Reading week overlaps with half term, so not the best time for most? A long weekend? Could you escape during term?

Voluntary redundancy extended, *this* time with the explicit message that the now-possibly-inevitable compulsory redundancies will get smaller payoffs. Plus we’ve got a figure now that the university is trying to save, and lots of fun ways they might try to save it.

Edinburgh, have you received the data used to determine which courses were 'not viable'? Because Nous has a track record of (a) failing to capture the full sign-up because of varying course codes for the same course in different Schools (b) only measuring fee-capture, not cost-of-delivery.
