'These photographs should be hanging in MoMA or the Whitney' - huge thanks to @sandyernestallen.bsky.social for this beautiful piece on Loren Rex Cameron. 'Body Alchemy' was a sacred text when I bought it, aged 19, in 2003. It still is, to be honest.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a popular/trade biography of Hildegard? I really want something cozy to curl up with, but that won't break my brain with inaccuracies (as a feminist musicologist). Trying to ground myself in the good things too, and Hildegard is always a good thing.

The worst part of my PhD research was having to read the 17th century texts men had written boasting and fantasising about gang rape as a bonding activity between buddies, putting uppity women in their place, and I simply don't understand at this point how any cis man doesn't understand this?

I think a lot about the fact that mocking/refusing/throwing outrage at the idea of building resilience used to be an easy way of promoting yourself and growing your audience in certain online circles. What are the incentives for brand growth vs. community health?

One of the things to come from GamerGate was the gamification of torturing real, live women...hounding them out of their homes, making them look over their shoulders for years. It was treated as a joke, nbd, the work of a few bad apples--as all terrorism against women is--& that failure leads here.

Do any of these clowns even know - let alone admit publicly - that music is a bodily system? Music isn't a programme or a language or a series of problems and solutions, although it can incorporate all of those things. It's a uniquely human bodily impulse/reaction/response THING - come on now!

I think one major way you can miss seeing this as a man is all the work women around you are doing to navigate misogyny is invisible to you. There's a minefield that you only see when it blows up, and you wonder, how did that get there. "How did Bob turn into that."

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.
