you need to just pack the supreme court, man. they don't care about what arguments you make, the legal movement formed with an explicit objective of making Watergate legal isn't going to make Watergate illegal.

It’s very strange that polling has us on track to win Texas and NC and Kansas but plausibly lose Maine?

I prefer the incremental solution that can be implemented through bare-majority legislation (240 Supreme Court justices) to Third Way's radical plan, which requires fully amending the Constitution (term limits)

It's important to him because he's a white supremacist, which is the same reason he avoids mentioning the Nazis or Confederates when he lists the foes America has defeated. My guess is at least one of his speechwriters believes the wrong side lost in WW2, if Hegseth doesn't.

This can be what it is but it doesn't mean people vote for it in the booth because the choices they're presented with are D and R and they have pre-existing perceptions behind those brands that aren't tied to ideological positions. There is a huge danger in assuming voters are well-informed.

I'm not even getting into the science of it because who fucking cares. It's a non-issue that is unlikely to ever affect you. The first sports ban was Idaho in 2020 and nobody gave a fuck before then. Hell, in 2016, the country revolted when North Carolina passed a bathroom ban. It's so dumb.

The trans women in sports panic has got to be one of the GOP's most successful manufactured culture war campaigns. Somehow they got a lot of people who would otherwise say they support trans rights to somehow fear "fairness" in sports. It's a non-issue.

a bench warrant for defaulting in consumer debt litigation is theoretically procedurally valid. it's just so insane that even the American judicial system generally does not do it. Roger Marshall did it 81 times.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

Ottawa has warned the Quebec government against the possibility of US interference in the current election campaign, which is aimed at favouring the election of a sovereignist government.

At the beginning of September, a senior official in the Fréchette government received a call from a counterpart in the Mark Carney government, we have learned.

He was offered the option of going to a "neutral location, where there were no cameras", and was forbidden from bringing his cell phone.

In other Canada investigations today, I have learned the Constitution had to be amended to replace the federally provided ferry from the mainland to Prince Edward Island with a bridge in 1993 (the ferry service—termed “steamships” in the constitution— was a term of PEI’s accession to the Union).

On Boston marriage, 1894
BOSTON MARRIAGE

What the Scarcity of Men in Massachusetts Has Brought About

The funniest of all social developments is that which goes under the head of Boston marriages. Two women, as well known as Susan Channing and Edna D. Cheney, have made separate appeals for this new departure of female habit, and have defended it with considerable success.

A Boston marriage is described to be a sympathetic union of two women, who have not been able to make good and agreeable matches with members of the opposite sex. Miss Cheney is of the opinion that in our present state of civilization they seem to be necessary and should not be interfered with. Miss

--The Evening Herald, 21 Feb 1894Channing also believes that since in our present state of civilization marriage like wealth is getting to be more and more the privilege of the few, the women unsought in wedlock or unable to get the men of their choice should have the right to form sympathetic unions with each other.

What is to hinder a Boston couple from adopting a child or even more than one? Why not grow a household in this manner? The meanest thing about old-maid life is that it takes to cats, or parrots, or poodles -- generally cats. I see no reason why a cat shall not have a share of sympathy but it has no claim upon a love it cannot appreciate. Besides, cat-love is a dreadfulapology for baby-love. By all means let our Bostonese adopt children. In this way, while there is no increase of children, there will be a decrease of homeless children.
