Things I Would Mandate If I Actually Ran English: • A factoid is a popularized false fact. It is not a cute little fact. • No one would ever write "begs the question" in any of its meanings. It's just gone. • People in Ingrid Bergman's predicament are not gaslit. They're gaslighted.

Obviously I talk a lot about bike/ped safety. But something that is really crazy is how much less safe you *in a car* since 2010. In spite of all the additional safety technology, vehicle occupants are less safe today than they were 15 years ago.

Bolsonaro convicted for attempted coup! Congrats, Brazil. Way to have rule of law. Embarrassing for the US by comparison. Both Brazil and South Korean handled coup attempts better than America, and get to still have a democracy.

After her hearing at 26 Federal Plaza, a woman was detained and escorted toward the stairwell. Her husband, confused and in shock, was guided toward the exit. Minutes later, he broke down in the elevator. They entered together, but he left alone. This happens here daily. #ICE

But another big determinant, I think, is candor. Before you can even evaluate candidates or parties "on the issues", before it even makes sense to do so, you have to believe there is some straightforward relationship between how they present themselves, what they actually believe, and what they would do. A candidate who promises things you'd love but who is merely pandering to you and would not in fact work to make those things happen is not even right. A candidate who won't tell you what they really think or what they would do is hard to evaluate, and in a deep sense is doing something discreditable, committing a kind of crime against democracy, by failing to meet the basic preconditions under which electoral democracy makes sense.

I think the marginal voter often votes, whether for a person, or a movement, or a political party, on the basis of perceived candor. If I am right, then the technocratic instrumentalism that Levitz advises will prove, has already proved, self-defeating, on its own terms. And that technocratic instrumentalism, intended in opposition to fascism and therefore in the service of democracy, is itself a kind of subversion of democracy.

Thank you. To be clear, I did not merely “dismiss” AI as mid. My argument is that LLMs 1) are not intelligent 2) average textual responses in a way that is mid 3) most generous use cases are a revolution of middle skills that don’t produce anything ergo LLMs are in every demonstrable way mid.

I think we (or at least I) have a pretty strong idea of what writing is as an act/experience. Every so often I take a step back and realize that over my lifetime, schooling has been on a steady march of alienating students from the act/experience of writing, replacing it with a kind of simulation.

An astute "gatekeeper" (editor) revealed the fraud by questioning a pitch that came from the fake journalist which led to the other fakes being exposed. That ability to think carefully about what we read is only growing more important in the AI era, even as some say we can outsource "reading" to AI.
