A chart: Wildfires have become a bigger problem in the UK in recent years. It shows cumulative burned area in hectares. 2026 is its own line, and it's already at more than 22ha, higher than any other time period. The 2021-25 average is at about 17 ha, which is higher than the 2016-20 period at about 14, which is higher than the 2011-15 period, at 5 ha, which is higher than the 2006-10 period, at 0 ha.

We should crack down on arson and ban temporary BBQs, but alone that's not nearly enough of a response to wildfires. We have to look at the entire causal chain: Reduce human ignitions, tackle the buildup of fuel in the landscape (rewilding can help) and stop contributing to climate change

This is so, so bad. She’s taken the very narrow point that domestic drilling may result in oil and gas with a slightly lower carbon footprint than some imports and extrapolated it out to make sweeping claims about UK emissions increasing that are entirely false. So deeply unserious.

I'm being a total nerd and collecting data on this but my tree-shaded living room is several degrees cooler than my exposed bedroom -- both south-facing. These places would be a lot more livable, comfortable and safe with trees.
