Higher interest rates will obviously cause financial headaches. They might also herald the end of classic private-equity leveraged buyouts
bloom.bg
The End of Private Equity’s Leveraged Buyout Era Is Nigh
Higher-for-longer interest rates are forcing buyout firms to face facts. Struggling since 2023 to sell companies purchased in the long decade of ultra-cheap debt before the Covid pandemic, they’ve tried to placate investors with clever financial engineering to help keep some money turning over. But after several false dawns for a return to low rates, the classic private-equity leveraged deals industry is moving into the final stage of grief over its prospects: acceptance.

Can US downtowns be places for more than just offices?
bloom.bg
America’s Office Bust Is a Golden Opportunity for Downtowns
In March 1836, businessman and former New York City Mayor Philip Hone noted in his diary that he had sold his house on Broadway across from City Hall Park for $60,000 ($2.2 million in current dollars) with the buyer planning to convert it into shops and a hotel. “Almost everybody down-town is in the same predicament, for all the dwellinghouses are to be converted into stores,” Hone wrote. “We are tempted with prices so exorbitantly high that none can resist.”

Why Is Oil at $100 If Trump Is Winning the Battle in Hormuz?
I don’t know who will win the US-Iran war. But if you ask me who’s prevailing in the battle over the Strait of Hormuz, it’s clear US President Donald Trump has the advantage. As much as Tehran says the opposite, the strait is effectively wide open. Crude oil exports from regional US allies via the waterway, plus bypass routes, have risen to about 80% of prewar levels. Iran, meanwhile, has seen its own oil exports plunge to zero.
