I have little interest in English Premiership football, but I nevertheless acquired a visceral hatred for Man City fans, and a consequent desire for the club to be dissolved and Etihad ground salted, after a decade of Chester to Mcr train journeys via Stockport in company of loutish City f*ckwits.

One of the things Man City will be doing now is recruiting (I'm sure they have one already) a crisis management firm who they'll give an infinite budget to recruit journalists and social media influencers to put our propaganda. There's a lot of money to be made by shameless people.

DoorDash spent $1.4M trying to stop Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor. This week's historic $131.5M enforcement action against DoorDash for underpaying NYC delivery workers shows why. Yet another reminder that the only thing that can beat organized money is organized people.

Listening to (very good) bleeding chunks of Bernstein's 'Candide' on Radio 3 tonight with a growing sense of horror that more time has elapsed since John Mauceri and John Wells brilliant re-imagining of this "operetta" in 1988 for Scottish Opera/Old Vic than from 1956 premiere to their intervention.

This unexpected Tory gain from the Greens is partly because Queniborough, the largest village in this "not quite as rural as it thinks it is" bit of Leicestershire, was threatened by Anschluß into Greater Leicester under latest local government reorganisation plans, and Tories fought the proposal.

Reform has already enjoyed several years of support from a loss-making TV channel whose main function seems to be to give money and favourable coverage to its MPs. The government has done nothing about this. It's probably a more effective way of spending millions than Farage will manage.

On Europe, on immigration, on so many issues, the evidence is clear: if you mimic the Right's attack lines, you simply legitimise the Right's solutions. You cannot have the kind of spending Davey wants while giving tax cuts to median earners. The UK desperately needs more honesty on this question.

Sad to hear Ed Davey peddling this. The *overall* tax take in the UK is historically high, but taxes on low/medium earners are low by historical standards & among the lowest in the G7. The cost of living crisis is not due to high personal taxes. Pretending it is just does the Right's work for it.

7 years ago, when Extinction Rebellion threatened to fly drones to shut down Heathrow Airport, the police rightfully intervened and said: "The airport is part of our national infrastructure, and we will not allow the illegal activity of protesters to cause disruption and misery to thousands."
A force spokesperson said: "The protest organisers adopted a different approach to previous protests, and as part of our commitment to public safety we have examined our decision-making to identify any lessons, to ensure we are well prepared for future events organised in a similar way.

"During that initial review, we found the force had received non-emergency information late on Friday evening that a protest could take place in the town the following day.

"This information was not fully assessed. If it was, it may have allowed the force to consider its resourcing."

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
