The bus indicator just up from Brixton is bust again. Come on TFL, sort it out. Hundreds and hundreds of people rely on it.

I really hope the publication of biographies of Anita Brookner and Barbara Cartland at more of less the same time creates a literary Barbenheimer effect.

At the bottom of the Lambeth Parking Visitors Permit online form is a box which, if ticked, means the details of a visitor’s car are saved. But when you tick the box, the Email (optional) box turns red and the words ‘this field required’. No explanation why of course. It’s a mad world, my masters.

A friend waiting for a train has just sent me this report from the platform: ‘Someone has just walked past pulling a trolley thing full of stuff. There is a book poking out, title. Why Eating Bogeys Is Good For You.’

If tomato plants have done me the courtesy of growing vigorously and throwing out fruit I think it’s unfair to lop their growing tip after seven tresses (or whatever it is.) I am six foot five inches so that Black Cherry is over seven ft and still yielding the most deliciously sweet globes.

One of the proudest moments of my life was seizing the opportunity in an underground carpark near the Barbican to tell Julia Gillard that I thought Colin From Accounts was a wonderful advertisement for Australia.

Things I was frightened of as a child. Big Ears. When he appeared on stage in Noddy in Toyland (1958/9) I ran out of theatre. Our house burning down. The teeth of horses. Planes dropping out of the sky. Heaven having no end. Frank Mitchell, ‘the mad axe man.’ The tank testing ground at Chobham

My old Book 4 colleague and friend Hermione Lee in the subway below Herne Hill station looking at the only public memorial to Anita Brookner, who grew up in Herne Hill and is the subect of Hermione’s latest biography.

I’ve just discovered that the poem recited in the film Carve Her Name With Pride (1958) which begins ‘The life that I have Is all that I have,’ used as a code by Violette Szabo on a SOE mission to France, was written in 1943 by Leo Marks who went on to write Peeping Tom (1960) for Michael Powell 📽️⚡️🩸

I am inordinately proud of this, the spoil heap I designed for the Trig Lane archaeological site in 1974. We used organic matter from the excavation to grow cabbages and flowers on its terraces. @jonwoolcott.bsky.social @jaketilson.bsky.social
