if you wait until midday and walk over the fate bridge to the dorm side, you should have a decent shout at seeing a nerodia on the rocks on the bank. unfortunately the crocodile was already gone when I was there for grad school

I believe it is good to be polite to robots not because they have consciousness (they do not) but because it is bad for the soul to let oneself become a vehicle for cruelty, even if directed at inanimate objects.

it has all of my least favorite scifi tropes rolled into one. roman empire but in space. lovecraftian elder gods. time travel (+ extremely inconsistent rules of said time travel). one-dimensional female love interest. AND YET I am still punishing myself by continuing to read it.

I am ~350 pages into a book and still have ~1000 pages left. it is the final book in a series of 7 and tbqh I have enjoyed maybe … 1.5-2 of the previous books. and yet I am for some reason still reading it?? one must imagine sisyphus etc. etc.

another breacher for comparison
Another (suspected bottlenose) dolphins breaching. This one has already hit its apex and its nose it turning back toward the water. It seems thinner than the previous The same dolphin, close to reentering the water. The body makes a very smooth arc in the air, without a round abdomen Dolphin reentering the water with its head submerged. Again, it has a very streamlined body when compared to the earlier individual

That means approaching pandemic prevention with a mix of evidence-based ecosystem interventions where we can support them, and investment in health systems. We could stop cutting down rainforest tomorrow, and the world's poor would still suffer from spillover as a health justice issue.

To thread the needle on the nuance here: we detect an unequivocal, but not universal, anthropogenic fingerprint. Human activities are contributing to the emergence of different diseases in different ways, and important drivers have much narrower effects than are often claimed.

What's behind this tidal wave of epidemics? In the largest study ever conducted on emerging infectious diseases, we show that the popular explanation - "our relationship with nature is out of balance" - doesn't hold up. Out now in Nature, after half a decade of work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

a really satisfactory end to a super long, shitty journey of feeling like my body didn’t belong to me any longer. it almost didn’t happen because I screwed up and had a relapse of my illness for two weeks in August, but I righted the ship and pulled it off. feeling healthy, strong, and super proud.

I spent much of 2024 pretty sick with a hard to diagnose recurring vomiting illness that cratered my weight. got it figured out and better in 2025 but had a rebound effect that trashed my health in the other direction, especially combined with work stress. being able to complete this race feels like

completed my first ever triathlon (just a super sprint distance one, NOT a full grown-up distance) yesterday and still feel pretty fkn stoked/proud about it today. had some brain fog the first half of the day and still a little sore, but nowhere near what I expected.

I really loved Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra. I mean it does examine societal misogyny as a theme that contributes to the horror/suspense but it is critiqued very directly and the story/author are not misogynistic
