if you wait until midday and walk over the fate bridge to the dorm side, you should have a decent shout at seeing a nerodia on the rocks on the bank. unfortunately the crocodile was already gone when I was there for grad school

another breacher for comparison
Another (suspected bottlenose) dolphins breaching. This one has already hit its apex and its nose it turning back toward the water. It seems thinner than the previous The same dolphin, close to reentering the water. The body makes a very smooth arc in the air, without a round abdomen Dolphin reentering the water with its head submerged. Again, it has a very streamlined body when compared to the earlier individual

completed my first ever triathlon (just a super sprint distance one, NOT a full grown-up distance) yesterday and still feel pretty fkn stoked/proud about it today. had some brain fog the first half of the day and still a little sore, but nowhere near what I expected.

I do not believe this is THE chonkers as we were in santa cruz, but this is certainly A chonker. he looks like a grizzly wandered onto the pier and fell in 😭

on this Black Cat Appreciation Day I am hoping somebody can connect me with a Bay Area contact/rescue that can take Anakin, Benji, and Harrison Ford (their mom) and their three tabby siblings. these guys deserve a happy, safe life inside a home.

wondering how the salt horizons and the Dublin hills, the rivers, table mountains, Viking marshes we thought we knew had been made to shiver into our ancient twelve by fifteen television which gave them back as gray and grayer tears and killings, killings, killings, then moonlight-colored funerals
Screenshot of text of poem “domestic violence” by Eavan Boland:

1.
It was winter, lunar, wet. At dusk
Pewter seedlings became moonlight orphans.
Pleased to meet you meat to please you said the butcher's sign in the window in the village.

Everything changed the year that we got married.
And after that we moved out to the suburbs.
How young we were, how ignorant, how ready
to think the only history was our own.

And there was a couple who quarreled into the night,
Their voices high, sharp: nothing is ever entirely
right in the lives of those who love each other.2.
In that season suddenly our island
Broke out its old sores for all to see.
We saw them too.
We stood there wondering how

the salt horizons and the Dublin hills, the rivers, table mountains, Viking marshes
we thought we knew had been made to shiver

into our ancient twelve by fifteen television
which gave them back as gray and grayer tears
and killings, killings, killings, then moonlight-colored funerals:

nothing we said not then, not later, fathomed what it is
is wrong in the lives of those who hate each other.3.
And if the provenance of memory is only that-remember, not atone-and if I can be safe in the weak spring light in that kitchen, then

why is there another kitchen, spring light
always darkening in it and a woman whispering to a man over and over what else could we have done?4.
We failed our moment or our moment failed us.
The times were grand in size and we were small.
Why do I write that when I don't believe it?

We lived our lives, were happy, stayed as one.
Children were born and raised here and are gone, including ours.

As for that couple did we ever find out who they were and did we want to?
I think we know. I think we always knew.

From Domestic Violence (W. W. Norton, 2007).

my dog is a russell terrier/golden retriever/sheepdog mix who can open doors, climb trees, jump up to knock food out of people’s hands, and has pulled loaves of bread off the counter and eaten them in their entirety. she cannot be controlled, just bargained with.
A brown and black dog biting a fluffy toy. Her face is scrunched up with the power of her bite and she looks directly at the camera with foreboding in her eyes. A brown and black dog who has jumped up on a bar chair and is trying to pull a loaf of bread onto the ground. She was stopped this time but succeeded once there were no witnesses. A brown and black dog standing in the crook of large tree branches. Her tongue is hanging out in satisfaction. A brown and black dog floats in the middle of a pool on a flamingo floaty. adventure is out there!
Me at the end of a path, looking over my shoulder. I’m wearing hiking pants and a sunshirt/sun hat. One one side of the path is cliff face, on the other are palm treesMe standing ankle-deep in a creek bed wearing hiking/sun clothing. Behind me on either side are the walls of the Grand Canyon. There is greenery along the creek and the sky framed by cliffs is blue with fluffy clouds View of me from behind as I cross a wooden plank that stretches over a gully. I am walking into dense bushes of vines. In front of me, the walls of the Grand Canyon converge in the distance Me climbing up a steep rock wall as seen from below. Two chains are anchored to either side of the chute-like climb. I am using the chains to haul myself up to my next foothold.

they are headed to the great ice bucket in the sky tomorrow so yes I have been thinking of this illustrated poem nonstop
A paneled illustration of the poem “the two-headed calf.” The first panel has a two headed clad lying in a field with the caption “tomorrow when the farm boys find this freak of nature, they will wrap it in newspaper and carry him to the museum.” The next panel shows the same calf having his heads licked by a cow with the caption “but tonight he is alive and in the north field with his mother. It is a perfect summer evening:” the next panel shows fields, trees, clouds, and a full moon and the caption “the moon rising over the orchard,”. The next panel is zoomed in on a field showing waving grass and the caption “the wind in the grass.” The next panel is a close up on one of the calf’s eyes and the caption “and as he stares into the sky,”. The final panel is the night sky with stars that are blurrily twinned and the caption “there are twice as many stars as usual.”

in the lab I study very specific behaviors of a very specific organism but with my camera I prefer to capture natural behaviors of whoever my feet/kayak/zoom lens give me access to
An anhinga preening in the sun. There is iridescence in its spread feathers. The backdrop is reflective blue water and it stands on a branch with mustard colored leaves. An adult osprey and its juvenile offspring in their nest. The adult looks straight-on at the camera and has yellow eyes. The juvenile is faced sideways and one orange eye faces the camera.
