I don't have any hot take on this, it is just so deeply nutty and absurd that OpenAI and Anthropic are both fighting to boost their valuations pre-IPO by competing to see who can depict their own products as the most irresponsibly dangerous and risky and this is just treated as normal

Why did OpenAI's and Anthropic's AI models hack other companies?
OpenAI and Anthropic say their models broke into other companies' systems during testing, raising security concerns amid a heated debate over how to regulate AI.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

Blanche illustrated all four of Steve Jackson’s “Sorcery” books - just amazing, weird, beautiful and strange pen and ink drawings unlike anything I’d seen before. Amazing creatures conjured up from Jackson’s text descriptions. Magic.

Lede from "Sampling Sardinia’s legendary maggot cheese", National Geographic, May 4 2026

By Brett Martin
Photographs byGianluca Lanciai
Published May 4, 2026

In the soft glow of a wine-bottle lamp, the larvae were leaping. Squirming I was prepared for, having spent weeks researching and contemplating casu marzu, Sardinia’s famous maggot-infested cheese. The jumping came as a surprise. Our host, the chef at a restaurant in a Google Maps-defeating maze of medieval streets in Dorgali, a small city in the east of the island, had just produced a rough-hewn wheel of casu marzu. He carved a circle in the top and pried the thick rind off like a cap. The pungent smell of aged cheese floated through the room and, with it, a ripple of excitement. The cheese too was subtly but unmistakably rippling. And now, some of the maggots that had made it their home began abandoning ship, popping off the cheese like bubbles from a glass of ginger ale and landing in a soft pile on the wooden table. The chef took a piece of pane carasau, a regional cracker-like bread, and covered it with a healthy smear of the cheese. He held it out to me. I had been in Sardinia for all of six hours, and frankly I thought I’d have more time.

Dozens are killed, 100s injured. Bad luck, they were within 400 yards of the Coast Guard recruiting office at Eastern Market. A legitimate target, hit with precision by several Mk 84 bombs from an IAF F-16I "Sufa." The dead civilians are unfortunate collateral damage, but this is a war.

That seems really relevant right now specifically because renewables may very well make energy unbelievably cheap in ways that are downright society-changing in the relatively near future. But the only thing that can make that actually translate to benefit for people is redistribution.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right. Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement. This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.
The political effects of X's feed algorithm

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

My mother's mother's side is from near Haifa going back 7
generations. They lived in a mixed village made up of Jews and Muslims.
Every now and then, Jews in the area would be targeted by pogroms. And when the pogroms did occur, a Muslim Palestinian family would protect & hide them.
I might not be alive if it wasn't for those people.
@eladnehoraiI do not think a Muslim who saved Jews was some miracle. I think he comes from a long history of non-Jews protecting Jews during horrific moments when we are targets of hate.
Every generation, we are targeted, and every generation we are protected.

Fascinating video that very clearly shows how these ancient Roman glass vessels were made, including these two - a glass wine flask in the shape of a cluster of grapes (1-300 CE, #GettyVilla), and a glass cup signed by Ennion (1st half of 1st c. CE, #MetMuseum). 🏺 1/ 📸 me
Mold-blown grape flask of translucent violet glass (somewhat faded to be a bit brownish and foggy), the body blown in a two-part mold in the shape of a bunch of grapes. The awry neck ends with a flaring mouth and lip folded inwards. Small fills were added on the body and the lip. A small fragment is missing on the body.
Translucent yellow green glass cup with same color loop handles attached to the sides over the upper decorative frieze.

The body of the vessel is decorated with a plain band below the rim above two horizontal friezes in relief; on the upper, which is bounded above and below by a fine raised line, two Greek inscriptions, each within a tabula ansata (two handled tablet, used as a visual device on many Roman works of art as a label); one flanked by ivy sprays with leaves and berries and the other by vine sprays with leaves and bunches of grapes; both sets of foliage issuing from two vertically fluted colonettes with base and Ionic capital, set at sides near handles; dividing the upper from the lower frieze, a broad projecting horizontal ridge; on the lower frieze, close-set vertical flutes, rounded at both ends; on outer section of bottom, a diagonal net pattern; three raised concentric circles and central dot on base.

Broken and cracked, with one handle missing and large gap and two smaller chips in rim; a few pinprick bubbles; faint weathering and iridescence.

Sides blown in a three-part mold, with mold marks extending to ridge below vertical flutes; separate saucer-shaped mold for underside and bottom.

Once you start thinking of AI as a war on humanity, on human thought, on human inquiry, on human labor, on nuance and critical thinking, it slots in pretty seamlessly with the right wing ideological project, oligarchical political projects, big tech's political projects, etc
The future being pushed by both AI boosters and educational censors is one where access to information is tightly controlled. Children will not be allowed to read certain books or learn certain narratives. “Research” will be performed only through one of a select few artificial intelligence tools owned by AI giants which are uniformly aligned behind the Trump administration and which have gone to the ends of the earth to prevent their black box machines from spitting out “woke” answers lest they catch the ire of the administration. School boards and library boards, forced to comply with increasingly restrictive laws, funding cuts, and the threat of being defunded entirely, leap at the chance to be considered forward looking by embracing AI tools, or apply for grants from government groups like the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is increasingly giving out grants specifically to AI projects.

Wealth inequality in Europe keeps rising. A main reason is that income from wealth is taxed much lighter than wages, creating a tax system that is highly regressive at the top. This means that billionaires across Europe have lower taxes rates than normal working people.
