This was true in the U.S. Civil War too, and the Union's winning story was, "We must break the Slave Power by any means necessary, because owning human beings is morally and ethically abominable."

I had the opportunity to chat with the Sociedad Tolkiendili de México about Tolkien, religion, and the power of his work to enchant readers of many faiths and no faith at all. I was thrilled by the incisiveness of their questions - I only hope the interview is as much fun to watch as it was to do!

What are your go-to resources on the dangers of LLMs and so-called "A.I."? I'm working on something and am looking to marshal a proper bibliography. If you have peer-reviewed studies that's great, but any reputable source on ecological, ethical, economic, psychological, or other impacts is welcome.

A deeply insightful perspective. While fascist narratives and Tolkien's legendarium both exalt an imagined past, their respective relationships to that exalted, imagined past are diametrically opposed and suggest radically different moral values.

A pereceptive reader pointed out problems with some of my claims RE: Tolkien's support for Franco in the Spanish Civil War. I've issued a correction and edited accordingly. When people notice holes in our work, it’s important to be honest and fix them, especially when they complicate our arguments.

You've probably noticed that a lot of right-wing ghouls love The Lord of the Rings: Giorgia Meloni, Peter Thiel, J.D. Vance, many such cases. In my latest essay, I set out to put neofascist affinity for Tolkien in religious and historical context - and to show why the far right gets Tolkien wrong.

I was admittedly a very bookish kid. But even before I tackled it myself - I was five or six, I think? - I loved hearing my dad read The Hobbit aloud at bedtime. If I didn't understand a word or passage or bit of dialogue, I just asked him what it meant. I learnt a lot that way.

When my first journal article got accepted for publication back in 2023, I never imagined that more than 2,500 people would read it. You always hope that your work will make an impact beyond your narrow subfield. I'm honored that people think my work worth reading, even just to disagree with me!
Screenshot of the landing page for an academic article in the journal Mythlore: "It is 'about' nothing but itself': Tolkienian Theology Beyond the Domination of the Author" by Tom Emanuel (yours truly). The abstract is too long to include in its entirety, but here are the key sentences:

"There is a broad stream of Christian interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction, especially The Lord of the Rings, which views it as the intentionally, essentially Christian work of an intentionally, essentially Christian author... [This article] proposes a hermeneutics of Tolkienian of Tolkienian inspiration that honors Tolkien's Roman Catholic foundations, the sub-creative integrity of his secondary world, and the religious diversity of the readers who draw such deep wells of meaning from it."

My PhD thesis "The Tale We've Fallen Into: J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and the Post-Christian Quest for Meaning" is now available to download from the University of Glasgow! As JRRT said of publishing LotR, "I have exposed my heart to be shot at." Please read it! theses.gla.ac.uk/86043/
"The Tale We've Fallen Into: J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and the Post-Christian Quest for Meaning" by Tom Emanuel

My thesis abstract follows, but is too long to fit in a single alt text box. I'll just include the first two sentences, which give you a sense of what I'm up to: "Despite the popularity of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (LotR) among readers of many religious and philosophical backgrounds, theological scholarship has predominately framed it as a Christian fantasy which can only be fully understood through a Christian lens. My thesis refutes these claims by exploring the novel’s reception among contemporary nonreligious readers. "

Just updated my conference bio, and if you don't think I'm going to take every opportunity to write out "the *Rev. Dr.* Tom Emanuel" for at least the next six months, you don't realize just how much of my life I set on fire to earn those dual honorifics.
Text: "The Rev. Dr. Tom Emanuel (pronouns: he/him) is a theologian and Congregationalist minister with a PhD in English Literature from the University of Glasgow. His doctoral project, funded by a research grant from the U.K. Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in collaboration with the Scottish Graduate School of Arts and Humanities (SGSAH), explored the reception of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings among nonreligious readers. His work on Tolkien and post-Christian theology has appeared in the pages of the Journal of Tolkien Research, Mallorn, Mythlore, Tolkien Studies, and Zeitschrift für Fantastikforschung, among other venues. He is also the editor of the forthcoming essay collection Tolkien and Religion in the Twenty-First Century with Luna Press Publishing. Tom currently lives and works in the Finger Lakes region of New York with his two children; the first words they ever heard read aloud were the opening pages of The Lord of the Rings."

J.D. Vance is emblematic of a certain kind of believer for whom the problem is never one of doctrine, still less practice, but rather apologetics. We cannot be wrong; we just need to make a "better Christian argument." The better Christian argument would be to act more Christlike.
Unrelated to that Handmaid’s Tale thing: Our society needs more children! He writes, “We want more children in our society because children are profoundly good.”

Who will be making those children? Will they be consulted? We’ll start “winning people over,” Vance continues, by “reflecting Christian charity in the way we champion the unborn. Examples are everywhere. All over the country, pregnancy resource centers help young women afford food and diapers, and support young mothers through the inevitable chaos of an unexpected pregnancy.” (This was not a winning message in Ohio, he concedes.) “And we’ll need to make a better Christian argument, about building the kind of culture and economy that can actually sustain young families and the life they bring into the world.”

Ah! If only we’d said it better! Then people would understand! We just need better words to smooth over any objections to the “inevitable chaos.”

I'd put it even more strongly in fact - a central theme of LOTR is that the world as it is *must* pass away, sad though that is, in order to give room for the new to come and the humble to be exalted. Galadriel & Gandalf must go *so that* Aragorn and the hobbits may come into their place.

And a good part of the reason Denethor is Like This is 1. he wasn't King and resented it 2. He thought he could handle the Palantir and instead was twisted by Sauron's propaganda.

Tolkien is no progressive in disguise, but he knows that whether you like the changes it has wrought or not, you cannot arrest the passage of time. A conservative may be someone who stands athwart history yelling "Stop!" but Tolkien is too stubbornly realistic to entertain such an empty fantasy.
"So passes Denethor, son of Ecthelion," said Gandalf. Then he turned to Beregond and the Lord’s servants that stood there aghast. "And so pass also the days of Gondor that you have known; for good or evil they are ended."

In which Denethor articulates the platform of the modern Republican Party: either freeze history or burn it to ashes.
"What then would you have," said Gandalf, "if your will could have
its way?"

"I would have things as they were in all the days of my life,"
answered Denethor, "and in the days of my longfathers before me:
to be the Lord of this City in peace, and leave my chair to a son after
me, who would be his own master and no wizard’s pupil. But if doom
denies this to me, then I will have *naught*: neither life diminished,
nor love halved, nor honour abated." (LotR V.7, 854)

What makes LotR hit like a Howitzer shell to the gut is not the reader's knowledge of the background mythology. It's their knowledge that it is gone forever. As Douglass Parker wrote in 1957, "Tolkien’s whole marvelous, intricate structure has been reared to be destroyed, that we may regret it."

LotR is Tolkien's masterpiece. The experience can be enriched by reading The Silmarillion too, absolutely. But my dad didn't have the Silm when he read the Ballantine paperbacks in 1965 and felt such immense grief at the ending that he immediately picked up FotR and started over. He didn't need it.

Certain conservative commentators make Tolkien out to be this reactionary holdout for premodernity. And God knows, he didn't love many things about modernity. But he was seriously, creatively grappling with it, and he's smack in the middle of a robust Catholic tradition of doing just that.

Reading Pope Leo XIV's encylical, it strikes me that J.R.R. Tolkien's lifetime spans the development of modern Catholic social teaching. "Rerum Novarum" came out the year before he was born (1891) and Vatican 2 took up much of his final decade. He was a modern Catholic, engaged with modernity.
