I cannot describe the brokenness I felt reading this from the Haaretz piece. The hostages were betrayed by everyone; Israeli leaders, the diaspora leaders & their orgs, the entire pro-Israel industrial complex, and by far and away the millions of people who cried "hostages" to support a genocide.

This reminds me of this section from Philip Slater’s “The Pursuit of Loneliness” The passage is about individualism but imo the same logic applies to our relationship to technology. We have created our issues through over-reliance on tech, and we then think the answer is more tech.

Running through all of these schools and churches was an open encouragement of suspicion: in elites, in government, and official explanations. On the other side of a faith in an unseen and all-powerful Father stood a fear in the invisible and all-ranging foe. While I can now see the evangelical community’s fears about the United Nations to be parochial and embarrassing, I can remember the vividness and excitement that suffused evangelical life, how it brought a visceral meaning to every day’s events. Today, QAnon is running rampant through evangelical circles, both in the US and abroad. It’s not really that surprising, Q is playing all the hits of my youth: citing Bible verses to exhort adherents to stand firm against dark elites, one of oldest songs in modern evangelical canon. We were raised with visions of resolute martyrs and courageous believers like Elisabeth Eliot or Corrie Ten Boom. In comparison to non-believers, an evangelical can live the thrilling life of an undercover agent, a member of the divine resistance, like The Americans but for Christ.

Far from providing a new view of the world, Q sounds like so many Sunday School and Christian schoolteachers I’ve had: “the greater world is full of all kinds of unseen evil and carnal villainy, let us pray for the coming salvation, and don’t trust the media.” Throw in some crankiness about the Democratic Party, and I cannot be the only ex-evangelical who is embarrassed to see so many people being persuaded by the musty fears we were raised on.

We must make peace with the fact that the real motivations behind human choices are deeply emotional and subjective. The pandemic and climate crisis taught us facts, no matter how hard and compelling, are only accepted by minds that are open to it. We must cultivate that openness.

It may not seem like much, but the problem is often that we measure all our movements by what they do for the outside world as opposed to what they also offer to their members. This is part of what makes them unsustainable.

Our movements, our world, and whatever new progressive world we hope to inhabit, will require us to have an inner sense of meaning. Rituals. Communities to live them out. We cannot erase all these things simply because many of us have moved on from the broken versions of them.

Yes, we must overthrow the fascists. Yes, we must have massively radical change. Yes, we need to aggressively force our governments to fight climate change.

But it is the fabric of meaning and myth making that allows us to even imagine what that could look like.

Three years ago, we had 11 people in non-operations Marketing roles: product, solution, partner, demand gen, and field marketers, a multimedia manager, a head of PR/Comms, and a CMO. (The technical and ops roles have stayed relatively steady. We still have a web engineer/manager, database, and graphics.)
We lost 2 people to layoffs last year, 3 people have left that we haven't backfilled, and last month came The Big Ai Layoff. That layoff impacted 6 team members, including the CMO. That left just me and one campaign director for all content, messaging and strategy. She just put in her 3-week notice and it doesn't sound like we're getting a backfill anytime soon.
