there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

Big news from @ij.org: A federal judge in Alabama has just ordered ICE and CBP to stop warrantless raids of construction sites, to stop detaining people without individualized suspicion, and to stop detaining people who present valid ID. More to come shortly.

Spinning back to this to note that, notwithstanding the majority decision, Justice Alito's determination to blame, in part, the lower courts is another example of the TERRIBLE job the justices are doing mistreating the lower courts, especially district courts.

We moved (fortunately just within the same town) 10 days ago so my Bluesky activity has been even more sporadic than usual. Today’s the first day where I think we might just survive this.

Awful. Just awful. A promising young man, a high school honors grad who joined JROTC and dreamed of becoming a doctor, killed himself because of the Trump admin’s obsession with hurting Haitians and the humiliating shame of an ICE ankle monitor. His blood is on their hands.
A picture of a young black man, dressed in a light blue suit with a smart black bow tie, smiling as he is handed a diploma from a school official, a white man in his 40s-50s who is also smiling. Underneath is the caption “Pierre Damas Bel receives his high school diploma. (Family Photo/Instagram)”Bel arrived in the United States in 2024 in order to reunite with his parents, who had fled Haiti three years before. The family was granted temporary protected status, purchased a home in Springfield and settled into life in the U.S. Bel dreamed of studying medicine and graduated high school last May with honors and as a proud member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), his father said. He was the eldest of three siblings and his family described him as smart and responsible.

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

On the subject of Dolly’s union/working class solidarity, her 9 to 5 LP included Woody Guthrie’s ´Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)’, a protest song about the racist mistreatment & media coverage of exploited Mexican farm workers who died when the plane deporting them crashed in 1948.

Meal prep in Austria. My FIL taught me to find and clean mushrooms (although I only trust myself with chanterelles / Pfifferlinge) and I am enjoying some in his memory this evening.
Two white and blue bowls containing chanterelles (one set cleaned, one waiting to be cleaned) on a wooden table. Also on the table are a mushroom brush, a Swiss Army knife, some dirty bits of chanterelle and a mushroom of unknown variety that was part of the haul. Two bowls on wooden table on a balcony with a view of Hochkrimml in Austria.

What is truly great about this country … and how this administration has thrown it all away. I’d say it’s a brave essay, but Julia Curlee would be the first to object that real bravery, which she exemplified as an indispensable public servant, is a different order of things entirely. Must read.
