I've been tasked by Kid3 to write a note about this, as he promised to bring it up in class (trying to get him to participate more) My word order is wrong in the 1st sentence, there's a missing umlaut, and maybe nie / never is an overstatement, but this is the best I can do before full coffee.

Sorry, wasn't feeling well, went to bed early and literally abandoned my post! I'm ok w/ using the state flag, though I agree it's a little confusing. It does get questions going 😁 In surfing competitions, Hawaiian surfers compete under that flag - one way Hawaii's special status is recognized.

This is from Kid3’s German book. I am but an ignorant haole, but I am pretty sure that two women are not going to be greeting one another with “Shaka, brah”

Page from a 4th grade German book on “Greetings around the world”. Featured are greetings from France, Hawaii, New Zealand and Japan. For Hawaii, the illustration shows two women throwing the Shaka sign and one saying “Shaka, brah”.

Have you looked into positions at a university/hochschule as a liaison for international students? Some of the local schools here in Karlsruhe hire English speakers to facilitate communications with their non-German speaking students. It probably would require a B1 in German though

Somewhat unusually, there were controls going into France (with only cars with French plates being stopped) but none into Germany. It’s usually the other way around. Wish there weren’t any.

I’m back from 🇫🇷 and have no regrets. The outlet shops at Roppenheim were busier than I’ve ever seen them - cars were parked out on the farm roads all the way to the bridge on the Rhine 😧

I’m getting around the closed stores in 🇩🇪 today by shopping (and doing some antiquing) in Alsace (the shopping part is happening after lunch)

A timber house in Châtenois with an old watering station for horses in front.

Escargot as an entrée. I also ordered a tarte flambée as the “small lunch” option but am currently struggling - it’s loaded with cheese.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

Big news from @ij.org: A federal judge in Alabama has just ordered ICE and CBP to stop warrantless raids of construction sites, to stop detaining people without individualized suspicion, and to stop detaining people who present valid ID. More to come shortly.

Yes. And my children can vote in LA County once they are eligible, since that was my last residence. The elections code bars from me from voting in CA if I move to another US state, but not if I move abroad.

010

Katherine Nichols @klenichols.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

It depends on state law. Some states restrict overseas voters to federal elections, some (like California) allow overseas voters to vote on state and local elections as well.

Spinning back to this to note that, notwithstanding the majority decision, Justice Alito's determination to blame, in part, the lower courts is another example of the TERRIBLE job the justices are doing mistreating the lower courts, especially district courts.

Was wondering this as well, especially since given its status as a charity (unusual to me as an 🇺🇸-an) In my home state of California, some open-water lifeguards have the same protections as firefighters because they are part of the fire dept, but others don’t. It depends on the municipality.

Awful. Just awful. A promising young man, a high school honors grad who joined JROTC and dreamed of becoming a doctor, killed himself because of the Trump admin’s obsession with hurting Haitians and the humiliating shame of an ICE ankle monitor. His blood is on their hands.

A picture of a young black man, dressed in a light blue suit with a smart black bow tie, smiling as he is handed a diploma from a school official, a white man in his 40s-50s who is also smiling. Underneath is the caption “Pierre Damas Bel receives his high school diploma. (Family Photo/Instagram)”

Bel arrived in the United States in 2024 in order to reunite with his parents, who had fled Haiti three years before. The family was granted temporary protected status, purchased a home in Springfield and settled into life in the U.S. Bel dreamed of studying medicine and graduated high school last May with honors and as a proud member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), his father said. He was the eldest of three siblings and his family described him as smart and responsible.

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art

A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”
